We see a dirt road winding around the edge of a wooded area, a European village and small church seen in the far distance. Gutknecht was born in Dusseldorf and studied art in that German city, as well as Munich and Hamburg. For a time he taught at the Royal Academy in Vienna...

The presence of the iconic saguaro cactus places the scene as east of the Colorado River, therefore in Arizona. Measuring 8” x 10” this work is done in oil on panel and framed in a beautiful gold leaf baroque frame measuring 18.5”x 20”

Poem 70-19 is one of the fairly small group of deep blue prints that Maki made. This one is 5.75 in W x 8.5in H and created in 1970. It is in good condition, with some toning due to its once having been framed.

An oil on canvas, unframed, measuring 23" by 19", the work is difficult to describe: a carp-like blue fish at right center appears with conical mountains that resemble Mount Fuji or desert peaks, as stunted bizarre vegetation, possibly trees, complete the visual feast...

An interesting painting of a brick church dramatically positioned in a rural landscape with distant mountains, the year 1898 appearing on the lintel over the door, signed at lower right corner "K. Shuck". Online research shows there was a Kenneth M. Shuck associated with the Springfield Museum of Art, having served as its second director, between 1951 and 1976. A 1954 photo online shows him standing in front of a Thomas Hart Benton painting. This may be by that individual...

He was a generally shy and not especially sociable, humble man, who turned down a number of honors such as knighthood, by an appreciative nation...

This is another of Haku Maki’s depictions of the kanji天 for day, heaven, sky. It’s a fairly easy character to make stark and lovely. The next year, 1971, he did another black-and-white dramatic rendering of the same kanji (Poem 71-51, which is below at #1452042 (stock #1077). The print is 12in square and in excellent condition.
