Originally conceived as part of a figural group for a larger commission, Charity depicts the doting love of a mother for her two children. Paul Dubois ( 1829 - 1905 ) originally exhibited it at the Salon of 1877. The famed Barbedienne foundry reproduced smaller versions for interior decoration. This particular version is 18", signed Paul Dubois, and stamped with the Foundry mark. Condition is very good with slight wear of patina to high points such as knee and nose...

The body is composed of two phoenixes, the heads of the birds naturally forming the handles. The stone is very hard, green speckled with translucent white. The cover is also formed of 2 birds, it is not pierced so it is possible that it is not a censer, although it can be used without a cover. It is placed on a finely carved hardwood base. There are some numbers stamped inside, probably so as not to mix up the bases. China 20th century around the 70s. Good condition...

Aquatint on paper 20" by 14" (32" by 24 1/2" in tasteful framing, with quality materials), signed in pencil at lower right corner within the image, the subject a lady intensely examining a print from a bulging portfolio in a studio, other works visible in other portfolios and hanging on the wall. Title I believe is "Dans l'Atelier". The colors are somber and elegant. Robbe was a major French printmaker late in the 19th and early in the 20th century...

Taken from a book with legends of the saints in Latin. Apollinaris was considered the founder and bishop of the Christian community of Ravenna. According to the legend, Apollinaris was apprehended at the gates of the city and brutally beaten to death.
Believers venerate Apollinaris a helper against epilepsy.

Georges Robin, French, 1904-1928, oil on canvas, signed lower right in good condition. It is 25.6" by 36.25" in a lovely early 20th C French frame 35" by 45". This beautiful luminous Post Impressionist painting is titled in French verso "Automne Bord de Sevre Nantaise" Banks of the Sevre River in Nantaise, France in Autumn". His prices go up to more than $10,000.

Antique (19th century) hand-colored print of flowers, possibly columbine among them, in a contemporary gold frame with contemporary expensive hand-drawn "French panel" mat. The print and mat and frame are in exceptional, wall-ready condition. Measurements 9 1/4" by 7 1/4" (19" by 17" framed). See other botanical prints in my shop. Allow for a number of reflections in the glass in some images.

A pencil drawing on paper, 5 1/4" by 7 3/4", (12 1/2" by 15" in modern frame), featuring studies of humped cattle lying down near an early wagon, unsigned, by the noted London-born artist GEORGE CHINNERY (1774-1852). Chinnery is known as the only western painter who was a resident of South Asia from the early to the mid 19th century, and a leading artist of the British community in India. After Royal Academy training he took at ship to Madras (Chennai) in 1802...

A oil on canvas of a jolly man smoking wearing a hat signed and dated 69 ll and inscription on back. Seems to be the original frame. Size sight approx 19.5" by 15.5" frame 24" by 22" . John Taylor Arms 1887-1953 American This is an artists proof etching by American artist John Taylor Arms. The title is Limoges, part of his French Church Series created and printed in 1932. This etching is hand signed in pencil with an image size of 10 1/16X13 5/8. This image is inscribed lower right: "Beautiful impression, pulled by D.S. and J.T.A." Inscribed also as artist proof number III. Printed on a J. Whatman watermarked laid type paper. A beautiful impression.

From a local estate, the homeowners having spent much time in Southeast Asia, an oil on panel unframed and unsigned painting of a younger man wearing some traditional simple clothing. The piece measures 26 3/4" by 23 3/4" and dates to the late 20th century. It is competently painted, the figure tightly outlined, the colors muted gray and tan and white, his waistband area providing a spare touch of bright color.

A decorative print, 27" by 23 1/2" in its white wood frame with blue inner fillet, after the painting "Blue Bouquet" by the important modern French artist BERNARD BUFFET (1928-1999). The painting was produced in 1957, so the print likely dates to the late 1950's or early 1960's. There are light scratches at lower right measuring about 4", and some small loss areas at upper left showing as white spots...
