Colorful, heavily impressionistic acrylic painting with palette knife, the subject beached wooden boats in a sunny Mediterranean coastal landscape, signed at lower left by listed French artist PIERRE MAS (1933-). The work measures 11 1/4" by 27" as framed. Mas used copious amounts of wet-looking, lush paint, creating an interesting surface and texture. Colors are very complementary and harmonious, the turquoise particularly pleasing...
Contemporary Japanese limited edition etching titled “Jalousie” by Ryoko Hirone depicting a nearly empty seat on a bus with cropped figures at the side of the frame and an abandoned umbrella. A crowded street is visible through the window next to a British Airways advertisement. Pencil-signed, titled, and numbered 10/30 in the lower margin. The original purchase price of $175 is at the bottom margin corner. Paper size 25 1/2" x 18 3/8" (plate: 19" x 15 1/4"). Very good overall condition...
Oil or acrylic on board, large and impressive wall-filling size at 33 1/2" by 45" (41 1/2" by 53" as framed), in a very contemporary style incorporating the complex geometric small squares repeating patterns of artist Robert Natkin, with the addition of various swirls and carefully placed parallel lines. The artist was surely familiar with Natkin's work...
Original color etching, engraving, and mixed media by Pierre Courtin (French, born 1921). This rare work is signed l.r. It is also titled "Reims", dated "21 octobre 1959", and numbered 4/4. The plate measures 17 1/4" by 7 1/2 " (44cm by 19cm). The framed dimensions are 26" by 15". Appears to be in excellent condition. Pierre Courtin in one of the most important master engravers of the 20th century.
Pencil drawing on paper by the important Russian-American artist DAVID BURLIUK (1882-1967), purchased out of a Berkshires estate in Massachusetts. The drawing measures 14 1/2" by 8 3/4" (21" by 14" framed), the lady in soft pencil and the ear study at right in blue colored pencil...
Daniel Tretiak chose to number this note 32, with no explanation of why there were no other notes between 28 and this one. In this note he focused on Poem J, a 1966 print that had just emerged (in 2019).
Born in German, known for his farm scenes of northern New York, he painted at Lake George before moving to the mid-Atlantic. He was a 19th century artist who also taught art. Little else is known
Circa late 19th century watercolor painting, probably American, 9 1/2" by 13" (16" by 19 1/4" framed), unsigned, featuring distant high snowy peaks behind a foreground lake. This was found in California and could be a scene of the American west. More than likely, it is by a listed artist---who neglected to sign his or her work. There is some edge browning from the mat, otherwise the work is in excellent condition considering its obvious age.
PAIR of original mixed media drawings, similarly sized though not identical, one 14" by 18 3/4", the other 15" by 18 1/2", and roughly 22" by 25" as framed, one featuring the 1982 trial of notorious Atlanta child murderer Wayne Williams, the other the 1984 trial of automaker John DeLorean, each signed by the artist, DAVID ROSE (1910-2006). Rose between the early 1970's and mid 1990's became one of the century's best known courtroom artists, his skills sought after by national tv networks...
Watercolor and ink drawing of the Seine in Paris by Notre Dame, 7" by 8 3/4" (13" by 15" framed), signed at lower left in pencil "Leprin". This COULD be a work by well listed artist MARCEL LEPRIN (1891-1933). I hesitate to state unequivocally that it is, as the long hand signature differs from the commonly seen all-capital letters version. The artist was known to do very similar works of Paris, and many other parts of France, from Normandy to Marseilles...
Self portrait of Adriaen van der Werff (1659 - 1722), from the series Raccolta di 324 Ritratti di Artisti Excellenti / Collection of 324 portraits of excellent artists, published 1790 – 1796. Coloured copper engraving based on Van der Werff’s self portrait. Adriaen van der Werff was a renowned Dutch painter. In the original oil painting from 1699 (now in the Rijksmuseum) the artist is holding one of his own paintings depicting his wife Margaretha and daughter Maria...
Watercolor on paper painting of a mid nineteenth century American house, 9 1/2" by 6 1/2" (17" by 13" framed), signed at lower right "Barney Moore" and dated there 1941. I do not see information on the artist but he was obviously talented. The house is of an architectural style that would have been common in the 1860's or 1870's, in many American neighborhoods east of the MIssissippi. Condition is excellent. Someone wrote "Moore 1946" on the reverse paper.
Hal Robinson (1875-1933), NY and Connecticut. This lovely impressionist painting is oil on canvas, 7" by 9" and signed Hal Robinson lower right. Condition is excellent.
This is a large work of art in delicate condition, 26" by 54" and 3" wide frame, so, I am seeking a local (Southern California) buyer who can pick it up. The painting, of a tropical coast with palms, decorative boats, and numerous figures, is well painted in an impressionistic manner, and is signed "M. H. Liu" at lower right in red and dated there 1967. A search of this name has not produced any listings...
Original oil painting on canvas by Isis Kischka (France, 1908-1973). Signed l.l. Also signed verso, titled verso "Viviane ou Eve aux Oiseaux" and dated 1959 (on the stretcher) and 1965 on the frame. Rare work by an important School of Paris artist. 35" by 20" including frame. In excellent condition.
Anne Lane studied art at George mason University in Virginia, completed her education at Saint Patrick’s college, Ireland, where she studied theology and philosophy. The tonal and contemplated intensity of her paintings reflect her 10 years spent working as an artist under the desert sun of New Mexico. Her vibrant style, resonant with color and baroque in detail, swoons its delight over her canvases...
Watercolor painting of a stand of leafless trees in late autumn, a small stream flowing through, 11" by 8" framed, apparently unsigned. I would imagine this dates to the 1920's or 1930's most likely. I did open up the backing and could find neither signature nor any other information, though I feel the work quite likely by a listed artist. I purchased the painting in New Bedford, Massachusetts...
Offered as a pair, pastel drawings of fruit (an apple, and an orange), each signed by contemporary Alabama studio artist JOHN KELLEY. The drawings are each 4" by 4", and 11" by 9" as framed in light wood. Kelley was born in St. Louis but moved to a rural area near Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where he works diligently, producing paintings and drawings of fruit, four seasons landscape, and portraits. Technically very adept, Kelley has kept a low profile. A fun and whimsical website including blog sho...

Oil on canvas of a verdant, flower-filled sunny courtyard, 16" by 20" and 1 1/2" wide frame, inscribed at lower left "Para Antonio y Cuca" and signed by the artist CARLOS S. SIEGER and dated 1945. I have researched the name online and elsewhere and cannot seem to come up with a listing, though the artist was skilled. I purchased this art in Miami Beach, so a Latin American origin is probable. The painting has a two inch split in the taut, thin canvas at lower right, hidden in the foliage, and...

An abstract figurative artist known for his vibrant colors and swirls of buttery oil paint
A most unusual painting on wood panel, 24" by 30", unframed, featuring some gritty, tough-looking downtown Los Angeles men in a claustrophobic, vertiginous streetscape of old hotel buildings. The Hotel Rosslyn and annex were built in 1914 and 1923, respectively, and were fashionable places to stay, in their day, at Fifth and Main in old downtown. The medium used is likely casein or other non-oil, water-based paint. The painting takes from older Social Realist painting and murals of the early ...
John Taylor Arms

American
This is an artists proof etching by American artist John Taylor Arms. The title is Limoges, part of his French Church Series created and printed in 1932. This etching is hand signed in pencil with an image size of 10 1/16X13 5/8. This image is inscribed lower right: "Beautiful impression, pulled by D.S. and J.T.A." Inscribed also as artist proof number III. Printed on a J. Whatman watermarked laid type paper. A beautiful impression.
Oil on canvas landscape, unframed, 14 1/2" by 21", signed at lower right, titled "Sheep Herds" or similar on reverse, the subject a forest with a vaguely defined figure at right, and equally vaguely defined sheep at center left. The landscape composition is almost semi abstract, reminiscent of Albert Pinkham Ryder. The artist, GEORGE THOMPSON PRITCHARD (1878-1962), was a widely traveled man whose reputation is likely muddied by those wide travels, which led to his tackling a wide range of subj...

Jacques Gabriel was born in Port-au-Prince in 1934 and died in 1988. He joined the Foyer des Arts Plastiques in 1954. Alex Jeanty successfully taught him in watercolors, Néhémy Jean in designing, and Dieudonné Cédor and Dorcely in oils. He has exhibited in Europe and Haiti. His art is mentioned in many Haitian art books. "Gabriel's rigor and clear colors contrast with his strong, colorful personality," says Gerald Alexis in his book Peintres Haitiens
PAIR of watercolors, the larger of raspberries on the vine, painted with amazing attention to detail and realism, measuring 10 3/4" by 8" inside the mat; the smaller painting of three bright red cherries and a leaf, measuring 6" by 9" inside the mat, BOTH SIGNED AT LOWER RIGHT with initials "M. C. R.". Since acquiring these works together at a shop in California's Gold Country a few years back, I have attempted to figure out who might have created them. A logical choice would be American still...
Oil on canvas laid on board painting of a late autumn landscape, complete with flaming trees and distant hillside across a lake, 9 1/2" by 13" (13"by 17" in old likely original frame),signed at lower right by American artist Isabel Scott. The painting likely dates to the years before 1950---possibly to the 1930's I am thinking. Condition is excellent. I do not see biographical information on any artist that would correspond to this name. A pleasing and affordable autumnal scene firmly in the...
Watercolor and ink on paper laid on illustration board, 17 1/2" by 23", unframed, the subject a rural road with houses, low mountains in the background, signed at lower right by California watercolor artist RITCHIE ALLEN BENSON (1941-1996). This is a nicely executed work and it is in excellent, fresh condition with no foxing nor water staining. Benson was born in the Los Angeles area and died in Washington state, but there is limited biographical information on him. He apparently worked mostly i...
Chinese brush painting by Nie Ou. A well known female artist in China, she was born in 1948. She graduated from Central Art Academy School in Beijing and has received several awards. Her work is shown worldwide. This is one of seven pictures we have. It is mounted on silk brocade. The entire area is 19 inches by 29 inches; the picture size is 13 inches by 18 inches.
Figure 1 is one of a large group of prints that were themselves usually large in size and in subject—one Chinese character in red on a black background. Daniel Tretiak called these prints Big Reds. Maki tended to insert one or more of such prints in the Figure, Poem and Work series. This Figure is number 8 of an edition of 50. It measures 14in wide X 21.75in high. There is tape residue on all four sides of the back—it has no impact on the front. Like virtually all of his Big Reds, this Mak...

19th century Indian oval portrait miniature, depicting Shah Jahan and his wife, oil on ivory, 4 1/4" h x 3 1/4" w. Provenance: From a New York collection.
A highly detailed nineteenth century PENCIL DRAWING, NOT A PRINT, featuring a classic turreted castle, with numerous (approximately twenty) figures completing the scene, unframed, 7" by 9 1/8". The artist signed at lower left corner "F. Pohl", and "1846" is written on the reverse. Nearby are two blue stamps that could be collector stamps. Condition is excellent, needs a frame.
Oil on an old board, the subject a snowy high mountain peak at left framed by a forested ridge in the middle ground. 9 1/2" by 13 1/2", the frame 2 3/4" wide on a side, signed at extreme right by the noted Hungarian impressionist painter LASZLO NEOGRADY (1896-1962). Neogrady's later works, such as forested mountains under heavy snow, being much more impressionistic in style, are more familiar to the art buying public. This work likely dates to the 1920's to 1940's period, judging from the b...
An original watercolor drawing of a familiar California theme: surfers at the beach, with lifeguard tower, palms, and two parked classic late 1940's Woodies vehicles. The work is signed at lower left "Dry......" ("Drysbock", or similar?) and measures 4 1/2" by 6 1/2". It comes matted but with no frame and glass. Likely is a contemporary work. Looks like a print but guaranteed to be original work.
Pencil on paper drawing of a young man, in true 1930's American Scene style. The work measures 12 1/4" by 9 1/2" inside the present mat, the full sheet extending under the mat (some of the drawing is hidden by present mat) 14 1/2" by 11 3/8". The work is unsigned. I would imagine that the artist would be someone listed, judging from the quality and sensitivity of the portrait. The paper has yellowed with time, and the area under the present mat is a different shade from the exposed area, so ...

Antique (circa mid 19th century) watercolor and ink drawing, of the famous ruins of Palmyra, Syria, which were partially damaged during the relatively recent ISIS occupation of the archaeological site. Research indicates the piece is after an early 19th century print. Artist is anonymous. Dimensions are 9 3/4" by 14 3/4" inside the mat (with hand drawn lines) and 16" by 20" overall (unframed, just in the mat, which is laid down over the art). This unusual and inventive designed leaf shape snuff bottle is 3 inches tall 2 ½ inches wide and less than 1 inch thick. The color is from beige to burgundy and very well polished and hollowed. It depicts three squirrels chasing each other under grapevine. The workmanship is excellent. The artist Chen Ke uses the natural color of the stone so well, it looks like inlay or overlay work. Please e-mail us for more information about him and his work.

This print is by John Woodhouse Audubon, the younger son of the famed naturalist John James Audubon, and very much an active part of the family of talented artists documenting the botany and the animals native to North America. The work is one of the larger size original prints, plate number 139, titled "Large-Tailed Spermophile" (Latin name "Spermophilus macrourus, Bennett"). The subject is a male weasel-like North American small mammal in its natural habitat. The print is not a reproduction...
