Haku Maki did a wide range of works: prints of many sizes, book plates, greeting cards, and postcards. Here are four postcards that he did in 1999. They are lithographs, each signed and with a Maki seal. They also appeared as prints at the same time. Haku Maki or his family produced them in the last year or so of his life.

Watercolor on paper, 13" by 21 1/2" inside the original gold over mat, 20 1/2" by 29" in its original goldish frame (no glass), apparently unsigned, the subject the dramatic waterfalls of the tropics----Iguassu Falls on the Brazil/Argentina border, perhaps, or Victoria Falls in central Africa. Unfortunately there is no title or location given, though these would be good guesses...

Large original mid-century woodcut by Davira Fisher (USA, Cincinnati, 1918-1986). This work is signed in pencil by the artist L.R. Dated 1960, titled "Lonely Trees", and numbered 18/100. Framed. Davira Fisher is a well listed African American artist from Cincinnati aptly known for her woodblock prints, often depicting the Mount Adams neighborhood of her city.

This is a surprisingly good kanji It was done in 1972,slightly beyond Haku Maki's core period for such small kanji. It is the character for Mu or Nothing It is a very abstract depiction of the character, more so than most of Maki’s rendering of Nothing, which he did many times. This image is sharp and concise and it has drive. It has the Maki style and balance:a seal and the bottom margin. The seal at the right is balanced off by the splash at the left

A John Hubert Beynon watercolor painting believed to be painted in the 1930s. This vintage lovely small - 3-1/2" x 2-5/8" - size watercolour is in a chip carved gilt wood frame. This Canadian artist was born in Minnedosa Manitoba Canada in 1890. He painted landscapes in Ontario and Quebec. He is represented in the National Gallery of Canada collection. He studied art in New York and in the Central Ontario School of Art. This painting shows a hilly lake shore with windswept trees...

Etching of a young woman in dreamy sleep, 11 1/2" by 8 1/2" (14 3/4" by 11 3/4" simply framed), titled in the plate "Die Rosen", signed in the plate and again in the margin below in pencil by the German-born artist OTTO GOETZE (1868-1945). The artist's name is also sometimes spelled "Goetz" and some cite a death date of 1931. Goetze was born in Germany and was in San Francisco by 1930. Though evidently little known, judging at least from this sensitively rendered print, he was a master etcher...

Some time ago one Connie Elrod offered me a set of the Maki zodiac in a format never seen before or since. These are not pulled from cement blocks. Rather they seem to be printed lithographs. One James Imai, a friend of Maki who lives in California, commissioned Maki to do a special zodiac set for the Lunar Year. Imai seems to have sent a card every year to friends. Imai sent them to his friend James Elrod seemingly one every year for 12 years...

An oil on panel painting of a red covered bridge in a mountain landscape, a village at left center, 13" by 19 1/2" (16" by 22" framed), signed at lower right by artist Ed Mifflin. I do not see a listing for this name. The scene likely shows Vermont or Maine; possibly there are covered bridges in hilly southern Ohio that might fit. In any event the circa 1960 work is very poetic...

A guaranteed **ORIGINAL** vintage 1974 watercolor painting, not a print or reproduction of any kind (as often encountered), by the noted painter of musicians and jazz, LEO MEIERSDORFF (1934-1994). The work, on paper, measures 15" by 17 3/4" (22" by 24 1/2" in metal frame, no glass). The painting's colors remain brilliant after fifty years. Meiersdorff led an interesting life. Born in Berlin, between the wars, he showed an early desire to work in the arts...

A nice naïve portrait of a woman, painted in watercolors on organic wafer. The sitter is simply presented in a black dress with lace edging at the bodice. An interesting twist is the fragment of a business card in the back of the case. It says "Painter ***wich City CT" (Norwich City)...
