This is an unframed study in pencil by a noted figure in eastern American art, XANTHUS RUSSELL SMITH (1839-1929). The artist, at age 85, signed it with his distinctive "XS" monogram at lower left, and wrote "Painted in oil this size", and dated it Nov. 29- 1924. The sketchbook paper measures 6 5/8" by 9". It would be interesting to pair this with the oil version, in order to gain insight into the artist's artistic process...

Nicely drawn watercolor and pencil work titled "The Entrance" on backing, signed at lower left by German-born contemporary artist and author "Renata Zerner", and dated 1972. The piece measures 17" by 11" and 20 1/4" by 17 1/4" in the period aluminum frame. The image is quite mysterious and dreamy, a male and a female torso standing on either side of a portal of sorts. The artist has left it to the viewer to decide exactly where "The Entrance" leads. Condition is excellent...

Etching of children in a landscape, 8 1/4" by 10 3/4" inside the present mat (the full sheet 14 1/2" by 17"), not signed but printed information on mat provides artist name, a possible title "Hagyateki Anyaga" and possible edition ("5/50"). The artist is ISTVAN SZONYI (1894-1960). A student of Karoly Ferenczy at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1913, he had early exposure to the art colony at Nagybanya and its prominent and gifted figures, including greats such as Vilmos Aba Novak...

Oil on canvas of a mysterious red cabbage on a string and an orange gourd on a tiled surface, windows beyond looking out onto a hilly landscape, 16" by 20" (23 1/2" by 27" signed "Hernandez" and dated 1995 at lower right. The painting should probably be reframed, as the cream liner is soiled. The painting has some yellowed varnish but otherwise is in good condition.

Nicely painted watercolor painting of dramatic alpine landscape, the location identified on the reverse in old Germanic handwriting that is somewhat difficult to decipher, though we can make out "Schoberspitze" and "Hohe Warte", placing this in Austria. This hand carved rock crystal snuff bottle is 2 ½ inches tall, 1 ¼ inches wide and 1 inch thick. It depicts a bird resting on a small branch of a gourd plant. The snuff bottle is well hollowed and polished. It has a cone shaped agate top. The crystal has natural grains and impurities.
