Naive painting of peasant figures in traditional clothing, sheep, llamas, birds and snow-capped mountains, signed at lower left by artist Inez Zodqui and titled "ECUADOR" at lower center. The small painting measures only 6" by 8" but there is a lot going on in this small space. The primitive art style is popular with tourists to the region. Condition is excellent. Frame if you wish or hang as-is.
Watercolor painting of yellow roses on their prickly stems, 11" by 7 3/4" (16 1/2" by 12 3/4" framed), unsigned, circa late 19th century or early 20th. There is an old framer's label on the reverse backing from Boston. Condition is good, mat should be replaced, as well as old-style acidic old sawn wood backing boards. The mat edges did leave browning to mark their presence but that would be hidden completely by a new mat.
One of two works by the artist in my shop, this is an etching on paper, 8 3/4" by 6 5/8" sheet, signed in pencil at lower right margin "PHILIP KAPPEL". This is a fine etching of a pair of wind-sculpted pine trees on an exposed knoll, by a well regarded artist most associated with Connecticut, where he was born and where he died. Kappel's work includes a wide variety of subjects in painting and the graphic arts...
"William Hogarth" "Receipt for the Election Prints"
and
"Columbus Breaking the Egg" The Works of William Hogarth" as published by Baldwin, Cradock and Joy in 1822 with the original plates restored by James Heath, engraver to His Majesty. The Heath edition was the last to print directly from Hogarth's original engraved plates. All William Hogarth prints appearing after this date are copies of these original graphic works of art...
Nicely executed watercolor still life of various articles including a cup or shaving mug, spoon, coffee grinder, ginger jar, fan, and ceramic jug, 14 1/2" by 19" (23 1/2" by 27" in a circa 1960's green frame), signed at lower left by artist Pauline Goode. I was not able to locate information on the artist until I dug down into the internet, which provided a snippet from a 1956 Pasadena, California newspaper...
A small etching of one of the classic old buildings of America's oldest coastal cities, perhaps New Orleans or Charleston South Carolina, titled "Street Cart", numbered 91/150 and signed "Godzala" or similar. The etching measures 3 3/4" by 2 1/2" inside the mat and 10 1/4" by 8 1/4" in the silver metal frame. Condition is excellent. The piece likely dates to the 1990's through present. I do not see an obvious artist that would correspond with the name.
American circa 1910 or at least early twentieth century pastel on paper drawing of grapes, apples and a banana, 17" by 20 3/4" framed in an oval, unsigned. The work is typical of pastel still life of the period, though I do not believe it by the "Chandler" workshop. Modest homes of the period were lucky to have an original work of art rather than a print. This one has survived in very good condition...
A small late 20th century watercolor titled on reverse label "Brazeau River", signed lower right with initials "MH". The work measures 5" by 3 1/4" inside the mat and 9" by 7" as framed. The Brazeau River is 130 miles in length and runs in a generally easterly direction from the high Canadian Rockies of Alberta, through the foothills and towards the plains where it merges with the North Saskatchewan River...
Late 19th or early 20th century American watercolor of several small sailing craft off a dock, signed at lower right with what appears as "L. Hart" or similar. (There might be a "18" below the signature---possibly as in 1918, but it is difficult to make out with any certainty). The work measures 9 3/4" by 8" (14 3/4" by 13" framed). Let's call the artist a talented amateur who created a pleasant scene. Condition is good. Gilded oak framing has light wear but is complementary to the art...
Wall-ready open edition modern color print from the Ethan Allan Home Collection, after the painting "The Parson's Cat", by the Dutch-born woman artist HENRIETTE RONNER-KNIP (1821-1909). The art measures 8 3/4" by 11 3/4" inside the double mat, and 19" by 21 1/2" as nicely framed. The artist's original oils regularly achieve the mid five figures at auctions, and a number have exceeded six figures...

Oil on board floral still life, 9 1/2" by 7 1/4" (11 1/2" by 9 1/4" framed), signed at lower right by listed artist JANET EDNA GREENLEAF (some give birth date as 1936). Born in Indiana, the artist studied in the San Francisco Bay area and also lived for significant periods of time in Smithfield, Rhode Island. Her generally small paintings of vases with flowers, similar to this one, are often encountered especially in the Northeast...
American watercolor painting on heavy watercolor paper, of trees in a shaded landscape, circa mid 20th century. The unsigned work measures 15 1/2" by 22 1/2" (unframed). Condition is excellent; small pinholes in corners where the artist had this affixed while working on it. Could probably be sent rolled in a tube for savings on shipping.
Unframed oil on canvas painting of young faces, signed at lower right by artist "S. Lewis". The work measures 14" by 11". It may date to circa 1980 to 2000. Other than minor edge losses at top from frame abrasion, condition is very good, though the surface is not varnished.
Lithograph on paper, 15 3/4" by 11 1/2", titled on reverse original Associated American Artists label "Mexican Girl", pencil signed at lower right by the listed Mexican artist IGNACIO AGUIRRE(1900-1990). Aguirre was a painter and graphic artist, who produced this work in cooperation with the Associated American Artists at mid century. He was a member of the prestigious Taller de Grafica Popular, perhaps the premier graphic artists group in Mexico in the middle years of the 20th century...
Impressionist painting of harborside buildings, apparently American as original "$70.00" price on reverse appears adjacent to title "Fishing Village" and the 1965 date---although the subject appears more European. Work is on Masonite, and measures 18" by 22" as framed in white and black painted wood. That framing is scuffed and soiled, shows its age. If you are handy and so inclined you could restore it nicely, retaining the original period look, or, re-frame...
This collection of 8 colorful clown prints are so vivid. They are part of a collection of reproductions of the oil paintings from the 1966 Award Winning Clown Collection. They each measure 8" x 10". They are all in excellent condition, (still in their plastic sleeves)...
Small contemporary unframed painting, 10" by 8", signed at lower right "Harper", of a classic old late Victorian gingerbread house, complete with the turret rooms and wraparound porch that was so common in homes built during that period. It would have been nice had the artist identified the address, but that was not to be. The work is in excellent condition.
Oil on burlap type canvas, unframed, 29 1/2" by 15", signed at lower right "BEKE", date circa 1950's or early 1960's most likely. The scene is a classic Mediterranean coastline in Italy or Spain, or, just a generic Mediterranean scene conceived by the artist. I don't see a listing for this artist so am offering this as a decorative piece. It is soiled, and would brighten substantially with a professional cleaning.
A twentieth century pastel on paper drawing of white and yellow flowers in a white vase, signed at lower right with what appears as "Raymond" or similar. The work measures 10 1/2" by 8 1/2" inside the present brown mat (16 1/2" by 12 1/2" framed). Found in Los Angeles, the work is on English paper---I suppose it could be English. The hand that created this was talented and it is a lovely little still life.
Vintage watercolor painting of a bridge, a brick smokestack in the distance and some trees at right, signed at lower right by artist E. M. Woodworth and dated there 1915. The piece as framed in veneer mahogany measures 17" by 20 1/2", the painting itself 10" by 13 3/4". Found in Connecticut; likely a northeastern scene. Simple and charming. Small chip to veneer at upper and lower right corners. Glass reflection at top.
Watercolor on heavy watercolor paper, unsigned, the subject the sea coast, painted in an impressionist style by an American artist. The work was found in Laguna Beach, California but I cannot say that this is a Southern California work---although I wonder if this might well be Laguna's "Bird Rock", as I think I've seen other works depicting that feature, and the two birds above this might be symbolic. Unframed, the sheet measures 16" by 22". Condition is good considering it has traveled witho...
A charcoal and color chalk drawing of a young boy, 8 1/2" by 4 1/2" inside the mat and 11 1/2" by 7 1/2" framed, apparently unsigned. The work is affixed at three edges to another sheet, I was able to peer into the back via the open side and do not see any writing or other information there. The drawing extends beyond the mat, as shown. Nicely executed work by unknown artist.
The Boydell Gallery of paintings from Shakespeare must have been an amazing site in fashionable London in the early 19th century. The publisher, John Boydell, commissioned some of the leading artists of the day to paint scenes from Shakespeare and to display the paintings at the publishers Shakespeare Gallery in Pall Mall. The Gallery published large prints after the paintings in a portfolio that reached 72 prints. The printing plates were bought in the middle of the 19th century by Shearjashub ...
Oil on canvas, 12" by 16", (19 1/2" by 23 1/2"), the scene a white stuccoed house among flowering vines and subtropical vegetation on a sunny Mediterranean coastline, as one would expect to find in Italy, the work signed at lower right with a signature appearing to be "C. Rontini" or similar. The work is purely decorative and likely dates to the 1960's or 1970's. There is dry paint in the sky area, with a fine craquelure pattern. Otherwise the painting
Irving Amen's works are most commonly prints, as he is considered a master print maker in woodblock, etching, lithography and silk screen; this example appears to be etching or etching with aquatint. He also executed oils and acrylics in the course of a long career. This work, titled at lower left in pencil "Tenderness" and numbered there 89/200 examples, is signed in pencil at lower right. The print measures 18 3/8" by 12 1/4" inside the mat (23 1/2" by 17 1/2" as framed). Note the pale pink an...
Oil on canvas painting of a desert, late 20th century, 12" by 16" (19" by 23" framed), signed at lower left by California desert painter KENNETH WALFORD. This is a rather typical example of the work of this artist. I have handled a number of Walford's works. Most feature desert landscapes. Biographical information on the artist seems to be lacking at this time.
A group of three engravings probably by Johannas and Raphael Sadeler of Christian anchorites or hermits. The prints are after Maartin De Vos. These images were widely circulated in the early 17th century and printed and re-engraved by engravers other than the Sadelers. Interestingly of the three in this group two have no title, though they are trimmed right to the image and perhaps the title was removed. All three are laid down on early laid paper card, with the colorful surrounds painted adjace...
Antique watercolor painting of five rabbits in a grassy scene, feasting on several peaches, some reduced to just pits. The charming work measures 5 1/4" by 6 7/8" (and the old gold turn of the century frame is 11 1/4" by 13 1/4"). Frame is in above average condition for a frame of its type and period, with just one gold-painted area at left edge where there had been some loss of the design.
Antique watercolor painting of a castle-like structure in an extensive landscape, 7 1/4" by 10 7/8", 14" by 17" in frame, signed with initials "M. N" and dated 1882 and, curiously, also 1888, at lower left corner. This is likely by an amateur watercolorist. The work is a survivor, with paper browning, broken off corners, and a small puncture at center right. Presently it is loose and unmounted within the framing.
In 1879 John Everett Millais produced Cherry Ripe, the oil painting of a little girl sitting on a tree trunk, next to her a large green leaf topped with red cherries. Cherry Ripe became extremely popular, and so was reproduced in various graphic media of the time. Millais’s painting was also used in the advertising campaigns of the Pears Soap company. This version of Cherry Ripe from around 1910 is a chromolithographic print, enhanced with hand coloring. It is unframed, fixed to passepartout c...
Woodcut with the martyrdom of Apollinaris outside the city walls of Ravenna.
Taken from a book with legends of the saints in Latin. Apollinaris was considered the founder and bishop of the Christian community of Ravenna. According to the legend, Apollinaris was apprehended at the gates of the city and brutally beaten to death.
Believers venerate Apollinaris a helper against epilepsy.

A nicely painted and tranquil signed watercolour of a sailboat on a lake with islands and distant mountains c1920s. This 7-1/8" x 4-1/2" sight size picture is in what appears to be the original gilt and painted wood embossed 10-1/4" x 7-1/2" frame with a gold mat. It is signed L. Livingston (unidentified), and it is in excellent original condition with no chips, cracks, fading, tears, staining, foxing, losses, damage or repairs. All items are thoroughly and conservatively graded and all condi...
Watercolor on paper painting of a traditional Chinese junk near the shore of a reedy body of water, 15" by 11 1/2" (20 1/2" by 16 1/2" in simple blond wood look framing), signed at lower left in pencil with what appears to be the name "Tang". The transparent washes and deft handling make for a pleasing and calming image that is a fine alternative to a print. The work is affixed or pressed against the backing by the glass---there is not a proper mount.
An antique Kearsley hand coloured snake copper plate engraving print from 1801. This is a really fine example and it is entitled "VIPER-HEADAED SNAKE", from the original by James Heath. Published in 1801 for inclusion in "Kearsley's Systematic Natural History" series published in various volumes and with various topics beginning in 1800, this plate is from Volume 3 "Amphibia", published in 1802. Notations on the print include: VIPER-HEADED SNAKE, 1801 JANy 1 LONDON PUBLISHED BY G. KEARSLEY FLEE...

A George S. Culley watercolour painting of the Credit River, Ontario, Canada. This unframed 15-3/4" x 11-1/4" watercolour on paper is by George S. Culley (Canadian, 1905-1988) depicting a sluice gate on the Credit River in Melville, Ontario, Canada. This painting is in excellent original condition with no foxing, staining, bends, tears, losses, damage or repairs. It is signed G.S. Culley '64 on the lower right, and it is inscribed in ink in the artist's hand on the back "Sluice Gate Credit Rive...

Pencil signed by the artist at lower right is this contemporary offset color print, 8" by 10" inside the mat, 12 1/4" by 14" in simple light wood frame, the subject a poetic one of mother and daughter on a bench in a leafy setting, the girl reading a book, a picnic basket at right. BARBARA A. WOOD the artist is from Ohio but also has spent considerable time in California, and, I believe, Georgia. Her work, whether in oil or a graphic work, often features studies of figures and families. This ...
Pre-1940 painting of mountains and waterfall, unsigned, measuring 16" by 30" (19 1/4" by 33 1/2" framed), in the loosely impressionist style popular since the early years of the century. Ideal for vacation cabin or other rustic home. As found---some digs and light scratches are present. See photos.
Oil on canvas, 24" by 36" (33" by 45" as framed), signed at lower left "Cantrell". This is a good sized oil of a peaceful scene with tree and a house against the setting sun. I date the work to the 1970's or 1980's. Condition good with some light craquelure and very slight dimpling, but no holes. The frame upper left corner is separating just a little bit.
Oil on canvasboard painting of a rocky cliff at the coast, 11 1/2" by 14 3/4" as framed, signed at lower right "K.B. GUNDERMAN". The impressionist work likely dates to about 1960. I do not see a listing for an artist by this name (there is a Karen Gunderman who works with ceramic and abstraction but this does not seem to be the same artist). The painting has forty-plus years of yellowed varnish and light soiling but is otherwise in good condition.
A small unframed painting of a creek or pond in the forest, 3 3/4" by 5 1/2", signed at lower right and dated 1918 by early San Francisco artist ALICE MEUSSDORFFER (1871-1949). The work, roughly the size of an index card, is painted in oil on a thin card laid on a thicker card. Meussdorffer was born in San Francisco in 1871, the daughter of a well-known hat maker. A student of well-known and influential Bay Area artist William Keith, she was most active as a painter around the turn of the cen...
L'Evenement au Bal ~ Freudeberg....Nicely framed antique print. Light foxing but more pronounced within the boxed script and on the edges. No date. The frame measures 13" x 18". Not examined out of frame -sold as is.
Vintage hazy focus, colorized photo of coastal Santa Monica, looking north and west towards Malibu, 11 1/2" by 9 5/8" as framed in pleasing Southwest style design wood frame. On the frame reverse is written in and old hand in ink "Santa Monica Bay" and "No. 5044". This was found in Connecticut and I recently brought it back home. During its journey around the country it acquired some surface scratches and other issues, as shown in the photos. From a normal viewing distance these are not as ...
A naive ink drawing, possibly by a child, charmingly titled "EXCHANGES", featuring a mounted cowboy on right firing at an Indian with chief's headdress, firing an arrow at the cowboy while crouching behind a protective rock. A cactus at far left and steer skull at right complete the composition. Probably dates to the early to mid 20th century. It is a simple image, but states a message in a rather straightforward manner. Size is 8" by 12" in simple wood framing.
Oil on gray academy board painting, 12" by 17 7/8", 16" by 22" in the rather battered old framing, unsigned, probably executed in the latter years of the nineteenth century in New England. The artist created a comforting scene with a folk art feel, the handling of the trees and structure charmingly primitive. More than likely, this will need a new frame. There is a roughly circular dark area as seen at lower left, about 1" in diameter, that has been abraded. Otherwise the painting just sports...
Miniature size watercolor painting of two old structures along a fence line in the fall, 5" by 5 1/2" as framed, signed at lower right "Davis F. Schwartz". The watercolor probably dates to the 1930's or 1940's. Schwartz (1879-1969) has a sizable listing in Hughes' "Artists in California 1786-1940". According to Hughes, the artist was born in Kentucky, and went on to study in the Midwest at Art Institute of Chicago and at schools in Ohio. Before moving to California in 1903, he worked as an illus...
A lithograph, featuring trees aned dwellings near railroad tracks, pencil signed "HELEN NOEL EST." at lower right, unframed, 11 1/2" by 17 1/2". The artist is HELEN JEANETTE NOEL SHAGAM (1912-1989) of Illinois. The artist was active in the Chicago area at midcentury, with many works dating from late 1930's through the 1940's and 1950's in a Social Realist or American Scene WPA style reminiscent at times of Reginald Marsh, Edward Hopper or Martin Lewis; row houses and their side yards, workers,...

A vintage watercolor of two girls seated on rocks at the seashore, signed at lower left by artist Frank Lockwood and dated there 1945. The piece measures " by " and " by " as framed. All photos were taken through the detail-dulling non-glare glass that was popular in the sixties and seventies. I see a listing for a Frank Lockwood as photographer but no convincing listing for a painter by that name.
Oil on canvas, circa late nineteenth century, 21 1/2" by 26 3/4" and about one inch wide framing, unsigned, featuring feathery trees, distant snowy mountains, a lake with small sail craft, and a gentleman pulling in nets on another small boat. This painting is in need of restoration, but, I believe it well worth saving for posterity. There are some holes, the largest about 3/4" by 1/2", at lower left, a similar one at upper left, and some much smaller punctures at far right. The painting is ...
Nicely framed antique print. Light foxing but more pronounced on the edges. The frame measures 13" x 18". Not examined out of frame-sold as is. "In the French engraving Le Lever after Freudenberg, of the 1780s (illustration, right), gentle social criticism is levelled at the lady of the court; that she slept without unlacing her stays, apparently, perhaps can be seen as artistic licence. Her maids dress her with deference, while the wallclock under the hangings of her lit à la polonaise reads n...

This carefully crafted drawing of fuchsia and a tulip-shaped bloom reminds me of early American folk art Americana like Pennsylvania fraktur.......but, this is Russian! Condition is excellent with just slight mottling of a leaf... I think this could be just the artist's handling of the paint. A colorful and che...
Three small works offered together, all by listed California artist TERESA (TESS) RAZALLE-CARTER (1888-1972). The works, two signed with monogram and one as "Carter", are a small impressionist ocean scene, a landscape of a tree against a sunset, ("Lost On the Salt Flats/August 1971" inscription), and a small Merry Christmas greeting in ink and white gouache. An impressionistic watercolor painting of a tree and brushy field, 9" by 8" (13" by 12" in wood frame), signed at lower left and dated there 1929 by artist EMMY LOU OSBORNE. I do not see biographical information on the artist but clearly she was a talented watercolorist. Condition is excellent.

This is an etching on laid paper, the sheet 10 1/2" by 14", simply framed, pencil signed by listed American early 20th century artist HORACE DEVITT WELSH (1888-1942). The subject appears to be a coastal location in Maine, judging from the sails in the distance and the mountainous coast. Welsh was a student of William Merritt Chase, Thomas Anschutz, and Joseph Pennell. He does not appear to have been especially well known, and there are few auction records, but he did exhibit at the Art Insti...
