Miniature sized etching (2 1/2" by 3 1/4", and 7 1/2" by 8" framed), titled in margin at lower left in pencil "Cape Cod Shoreline", and pencil signed at lower right by Massachusetts listed artist MARGARET ELDER PHILBRICK (1914-1999). This is a mid-century work, I would guess, by a woman artist who was known for still life and landscape works, primarily in the etching medium. She was a member of the Society of American Etchers, and the Brooklyn Society of Etchers...

Old horizontal format landscape, oil on board, featuring trees, a creek or lake, the only sign of man a picket fence near the group of trees at center, signed at lower left "Ferguson". The painting likely dates to about 1925 or 1930. Measurements are 14 1/2" by 25" (19" by 32 1/2" in frame that dates to about 1965). There is stable authentically old "alligatoring" of the paint (a crackling pattern related to how quickly the paint dried)...

In the tradition of Victorian rose paintings of the late 19th and early 20th century, here is an unframed work, canvas laid on board, 11 1/2" by 21 1/2", signed at lower right "IDMAY". The painting likely dates to the early years of the 20th century, a time when young girls were encouraged to take up the "ladylike" skill of flower painting. "IDMAY" might have been Ida Mae----one of these young ladies. Our artist was of average skill, but her handiwork has outlived her...

A contemporary oil on canvasboard painting, 16" by 20", 19 1/2" by 23 1/2" as framed, the subject an intimate little harbor no doubt in coastal Maine, with a lobsterman's shack and traps stacked on the deck, and his trap-identifying floats hanging on the side of the structure. The talented amateur artist "Paula" signed at lower right and dated the work '98. The work has accumulated a little light soiling and two small abraded areas, as shown.

Watercolor on paper painting of a large sailboat off a lighthouse at the coast, some industrial looking electrical towers completing the scene, 9 3/4" by 13 1/2" inside the mat, 16 1/2" by 21" framed, signed "DNadson" or similar at lower right. This is well painted by a skilled but unidentified artist. Found in Los Angeles. Condition is excellent.

An oil on rough side of the Masonite painting of a windmill in a landscape with a foreground cow, painted in a skilled impressionist hand, and signed by the artist, one PENNY SMITH, at lower left. The work was probably painted in the 1950's, judging from the signature and style/materials. I do not see a listing for a Penny Smith, but she was trained. Measurements are 14" by 12" and the work is unframed...

A contemporary, unsigned oil on canvasboard work, 9" by 12" (12 1/2" by 15 1/2" in simple black frame), the subject small boats at a dock, one likely a fishing boat. The work was likely painted rather rapidly by an artist of talent. It is clean and ready for the wall.

Watercolor on heavy paper of trees leaning over a lake, a swooping bird and small boat with primitive figures in the right lower portion, 12" by 21 1/2", signed at lower left "J. H. Dore" or "T. H. Dore". This is a late 19th century work with a primitive and folky touch. The green mat is too wide. Reframe this charming work with a smaller mat for optimum presentation.

It is also done with embossing on magnolia flower as well as strip design above magnolia. The top blue stripe is done with applied paper. The etching done by Mary E. A pair of pencil signed color reproduction prints of classic wildflowers of Colorado, identically framed and of the same size, 10 1/2" by 8 1/2" as framed, both signed in pencil by the artist at lower right margin, and titled at left "Colorado Columbine" and "Wood Lily". Byxbe is a popular artist closely associated with Colorado's high country. Born in Illinois, he was showed early talent, studying etching in Nebraska. By 1938 he had moved to Estes Park, Colorado...

For the collector of botanical drawings and art, a nice unframed 11 7/8" by 9 3/8" floral watercolor drawing highlighted with a little gum arabic in the nineteenth century tradition. It is not signed, but I think at lower left in old faint pencil it says "yellow aralia", and at bottom, very faint and barely visible, there is a lot of illegible pencil writing. This likely dates to the 1860's to 1880's period...

This is the original cartoon art (5" by 16 3/4") for the daily strip of June 26, year unknown, by well known figure in American cartoon art, MERRILL BLOSSER (1892-1983). Blosser drew the comic strip for over 50 years, from 1915 to 1965. He started professionally in 1912 at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, worked for Motor Cycling Magazine, and contributed to Denton Publishing in Cleveland. Oil on canvasboard painting of a young girl, in the style of Margaret Keane and the "Big Eyed School" of the period, 24" by 18", unframed. The work is signed, charmingly, at lower right "Grandpa Friedman" and is dated there "64". The board is curved---a bit concave, or convex, as you might put it---but otherwise the painting is in good condition. A nice addition to your mid century Retro collection.

A colorful Haitian painting on canvas, 17 1/4" by 25 1/4" as framed, signed lower left by artist "Teddy C." or "J. Eddy.C.", the scene a typical coastal village of small colorful dwellings, with small boats offshore and three total figures, one on horseback. There is a small hole about 1/2" square at lower right as shown. It can no doubt be minimized with some tape applied to the reverse side. See other Haitian paintings in my shop.
