This rare and fine pair of portrait miniatures were painted by John Porter in organic wafers. Each is signed "J.S. Porter 1824 Pinxt". The sitters are a well off husband and wife.

The condition of the miniatures is excellent, with no issues to speak of. Each is under glass, with card backing, gilt metal matting, and gilt foil edging. They are presented in a A.P. Critchlow & Co. case which still retains its original label and is also in excellent condition...

The scene is the timeless, shifting sands of the California desert, likely in the Palm Springs region. The work was found in Laguna Beach, California but I cannot say that this is a Southern California work---although I wonder if this might well be Laguna's "Bird Rock", as I think I've seen other works depicting that feature, and the two birds above this might be symbolic. Unframed, the sheet measures 16" by 22"...

A fine miniature painting, attributed to Jeremiah Paul, of a handsome brown-eyed man in a black coat and waistcoat, white shirt and cravat. The reverse of the gilt metal pendant case has a glazed aperture containing a wreath and plait of hair, one of which is most likely the sitters and the other of a loved one. E. Grosvenor Paine provenance.

Condition of the painting and the case are both excellent, without problems...

Oil on canvas painting, probably English late 19th century, unsigned, of a small body of water, two cottages and a man in a rowboat completing this traditional subject. The work measures 16" by 19 1/2" (24" by 28" in newish framing). The painting could almost be called "Hudson River style" but it is clearly of European origin. Condition appears good overall to the casual observer...

The metal appears to be copper, as it shows through in some small areas where the black surface is worn...

A rare print by surrealist print maker Ozaku Seishi, professor emeritus from Tama Art University. He is best known for small edition prints, usually up to 30 copies, limitless experimentation with printing techniques and surrealist, often graphic imagery resembling distorted reality ¬neither quite explicit nor quite horror, but rendering a fairly dark version of dreams. This aquatint is from a 1974 portfolio titled “World of Children” (子どもの世界), which consisted of 30 aquatints. ...
