An early pencil drawing of a charming country house (barn/hayloft?) with thatched roof, a group of figures conversing outside. A pair of mules, a split rail fence, and plane tree complete the scene. The work is unsigned. Measurements are 8 1/2" by 11 1/2" inside the mat. Someone decided to re-use a modern mat that had evidently been used on a print, as there are numbers on it as if from an edition...

A fine old wood engraving dating to the sixteenth century, the title apparently "Saint Paul Giving a Letter to a Messenger" according to handwritten notes on the backing, which also relate that this is from the Biblia series. The artist HANS BROSAMER (circa 1506-1554) was born at Fulda in central Germany. He became known for his fine oil portraits, but also for his wood engravings and copper engravings, many produced for various editions of Luther's German Bible...

The painting is titled on an original 1992 label of Utopia Art, Sydney, "Bush Tucker" (tucker is the Australian word for food). The label is affixed to the canvas and "June Bird" is written in pencil on the stretcher. We seem to be looking at some kind of bush or plant which would presumably have provided that food...

The 20" by 15" painting (23" by 21" in frame) is quite atmospheric, the colors of the buildings, figures and cars standing out on this leaden, overcast winter day. By the noted Indiana artist WILLIAM A. EYDEN (1893-1982), an unusually good work in watercolor and gouache, featuring the beech trees associated with the Indiana landscape. The partially denuded forest is shown in late autumn, waiting for winter's arrival. Some leaves still cling to the trees in a chill wind we can nearly feel. The painting measures 17 3/4" by 23 1/2" (24" by 29 1/2" as framed). This seems to be an earlier work , maybe 1920's or 1930's, judging from its "tightness", the fram...

French late 19th century oil on canvas still life of flowers in various vessels on a tabletop, signed at upper right corner "J. Billou" (the "J" could be a "G" or "T"). Oddly I do not see a listing that would correspond with this name, but this is clearly a talented artist. The work measures 19 1/2" by 24" (22 1/2" by 27" framed). The colors and handling remind of some Renoir still life paintings. This was found "as-is" in northern New Jersey. Due to careless past handling, the work has acq...

TWO wood engraving prints of the posthumous late 1960's/early 1970's edition of "L'Enfant", each sheet 16 1/2" by 12 7/8", with stamp signature in lower margin, by the important French twentieth century artist ANDRE DERAIN (1880-1954). These are from The Collectors Guild, New York edition, the imagery in red on a black background, each stamped lower right margin "a. Derain". They were found without glass so are in good presentable condition though not mint. One has the original backing from t...

A beautiful pencil drawing of human hands, likely 19th century, measuring 4 1/2" by 5 1/2" inside the ornate French mat, 10 1/4" by 11 1/4" as framed in gilt closed corner framing. There is a little wear in the corners of the frame but the overall look with mat and frame is upscale. I very carefully opened the backing (with its English "Stephanie Hoppen" circular label and 150 British Pounds original price in ink), and found no further information inside or on the reverse, as to authorship, th...

A PAIR of watercolor paintings of classic scenes of Montmartre, each 8 3/8" by 10 3/8" (and each 15" by 17 1/2" as identically framed), each signed at lower left by French artist AMEDEE PREVOST. One work features the white Sacre Coeur church dome in the distance, figures and an artist completing the scene, the other work featuring a street easel artist painting a picturesque old house. Prevost does not seem to have a biography online, but a work dated 1897 would indicate a birth date of at lea...

A rare woodcut color print of exotic cacti in small pots on a yellow and white cloth, 9 3/8" by 9 3/8" inside the innermost mat, 18 1/4" by 17 1/2" as framed, pencil signed at lower right by the artist, EMMA (EMILIE LEONORE) MEYER (1859-1921). The paper use is an exceedingly delicate tissue-like paper. This is a finely crafted work by an artist from Denmark, who obviously deserves to be better known. Meyer was a Danish landscape painter, Arts & Crafts artist, etcher and woodblock print ma...

Watercolor and ink drawing of the iconic world-class sight, the Parthenon atop the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. The work is signed in red in Greek at lower right and there is an inscription in Greek handwriting on the reverse. Measurements inside the deep blue mat are 10 1/2" by 7 3/4" (16 1/2" by 13" in simple undistinguished strip frame). The artist has captured with considerable skill a sight that will never be forgotten by anyone who has seen it.

A large watercolor painting in impressive strongly horizontal format, the subject waves rolling in on a coast, sailing boats on the horizon, the work signed at lower left by artist "Langdon". This could be Chauncey Langdon (1828-1907), described on AskArt as a topographical painter from Vermont who came around the Horn to California in the Gold Rush days. This would fit, as I have seen (generally smaller, or small) watercolor landscapes by this same artist, (generally flat landscapes, often wi...

A framed nicely worked crayon on paper drawing of roses (possibly, Alberta wild roses?), signed at lower right "M R 1944". The stiff wove paper sheet measures 15" by 11", and as framed (to the top of the arch), 22" by 17". The framing appears to be the 1940's original. I acquired the work locally here in Los Angeles some years back. The initials "M R" and the disciplined way the letters and numbers were formed caused me to think the work possibly by major artist Man Ray (1890-1976), who did...

A contemporary painting featuring the streets of Paris' famous Montmartre, the dome of white Sacre Coeur cathedral towering over narrow streets filled with pedestrians. The work measures 10 1/2" by 8 1/2" (12 3/4" by 10 1/2" as framed in black). The work is signed at lower right "Georges" and on reverse is written "Georges---Paris---2010/Montmartre". Condition of painting is excellent but lower left corner of frame shows some damage and there is scuffing elsewhere. Paint it black or reframe.

Contemporary little drawing of what I believe is Pirates Alley in New Orleans' Vieux Carre, 5 1/4" by 3 1/2" inside the mats, 10" by 8 1/4" as framed (no glass, but perfect condition). The signature at bottom appears to be "FERRELL" in capital letters. This is likely a piece produced for the tourist trade, or it's by a talented visitor who wanted to capture this famous scene on paper.
