A typical example of the work of Dutch 18th century printmaker JACOBUS HOUBRAKEN (1698-1780), titled "Abraham van der Hulst/Vice-Admiraal van Holland en West-Vriesland". The small engraving measures 6 1/2" by 4 3/8" inside the mat opening and 9 1/2" by 7 1/2" framed. Houbraken was born in Dordrecht. He learned the art of engraving from his artist father Arnold Houbraken...

Watercolor on paper of wildflowers in a ceramic vessel, and what appear to be cherries in the foreground, 19 3/4" by 15 1/2" as framed, signed at lower right with a signature that looks like "M. Bals-Werthmann" or similar, and dated there 1944. I don't see a listing for that name or variants I have tried. The artist, working during the darkest days of World War II, must have been wanting to try to bring a little brightness to grim times...

Pencil signed in the lower right with the word "Worpswede," the artist's colony that he was a part of.

From our Southeast Asia Collection, a good Thai repousse silver box with burlwood lining, depicting the Thai and Burmese kings in battle during the sixteenth century. Sourced directly from Chiang Mai Thailand in 1990, this is a substantial box of good quality silver. The exterior has been allowed to patinate for 20 years and has taken on the usual dark grey patina typical for sterling silver, but the interior is completely pristine as it has never actually been used...

A framed and matted etching possibly of the River Seine. There are water stains along the bottom edge of the mat as well as very light foxing; the print also appears to have light foxing around the corners. Stamped A. Delauney del 8c sc in the lower left corner. The picture measures 5-1/4" x 3-1/2"; the frame, 8" x 9-7/8". Not examined out of the frame.

A well-painted oil that reminds very much of the posters for JAWS, the terrifying 1970's movie in which an enormous shark terrorizes a summer beach coast community. The work is oil on canvas, 16" by 20", unframed, and is signed at lower right by artist Ryan Wells, dated nearby "10". The shallows, clear water, and nearby vegetation suggest a locale like southern Florida, or southwestern Florida. The shark is especially well depicted. Clearly the artist shows talent...
