Oil on canvasboard painting of red tulips in a bright yellow vase on a tabletop, two apricots or peaches at lower left, unsigned, in a gold frame in wall-ready condition. This is likely by the hand of a talented amateur painter, but it all "works", with bright attractive colors and a clean overall appearance. The entire work as framed measures 16 1/2" by 13 1/2". See a number of other floral works in my shop.

Oil on canvas extensive view of a town of red-roofed houses by the sea, a colorful garden and balustrade railing in the foreground, executed by an unknown artist, likely in the latter years of the 20th century. The artist painted a highly impressionistic work (27" by 31", 35 1/2" by 40" framed) in cheerful, light, sunny colors. The work is very decorative and is in perfect condition, so would be an item that you could hang on the wall immediately. Frame is in almost perfect condition as well...

This was once a beautiful late 1950's period example of Italian abstract art, executed by the listed artist, from Venice, Italy, GIOVANNI GIULIANI (1893-1965). Unfortunately due to careless storage by one or many owners (it was exposed to moisture), combined with the artist's choice of materials, it is now a restorer's special, worthy of conservation. I have received a quote of $400 to have it relined so that it can safely travel...

Oil on canvas extensive mountain and trees landscape laid on board, 8" by 10" (10 1/2" by 12 1/2" framed), unsigned, circa late 1920's to mid 1930's. I am certain that this is by a listed artist but sadly there's just no hint as to who created this. The scene could be western, or eastern; hard to tell. It was found in Southern California. I would lean towards it being a western scene...

Oil on canvas extensive landscape of trees, a body of water, hills and distant structures, 24" by 36" (31" by 43" in gold frame), signed at lower left "Emile Bovard". I suspect this to be a pen name for a talented artist as I see no listing for an Emile Bovard. The painting was likely executed in the 1970's or 1980's I would judge, from the materials and technique...

This is an unframed watercolor painting on heavy watercolor paper, the sheet 15 1/2" by 22, the subject an mansard-roofed old 19th century house in a winter landscape, signed at lower left by a Los Angeles area artist of note, Ann Murdoch (nee Sanguinetti). Murdoch is not strictly "listed" but, a living artist in her 70's, now residing in the Los Angeles area, she has a long history in fine art, stretching back to the Village Art Show in New York, the New Hope area of Pennsylvania, and Chicago...

Watercolor painting of a lake and scenic mountains, 6" by 8 1/2" (10" by 12" in simple framing with no mat), apparently unsigned, circa mid 19th century, likely English. The gentleman from whom I purchased this makes regular trips to England and brings back drawings and paintings which he sells, so, that is why I am fairly confident that this is indeed English. The work needs a mat at least although frame could be retained...

Circa 18th century ink on paper European drawing, 11 1/4" by 16 1/2" inside the inner framing enclosure, 24 1/2" by 29 1/2" as framed, the subject a coastal village with small boat landing, the tiny figures going about their lives on shore and in the boats, and a classic old sailing ship just making it into the image at left, signed in the lower left corner "Jac. Watercolor on heavy paper landscape with house on a moor at sunset, a distant hill at left and blooming white wildflowers in the foreground, measuring 8 3/4" by 11 1/4" inside the mat, 17" by 20" in a simple old wood frame, and signed with initials that look to me like "R.E.M."---but this is just a guess. The piece likely was created in the last years of the nineteenth or early years of the 20th century. The shape of the house suggests to me an English rather than American origin...

Coastal seascape painting on pebbly surface old gray art board, likely the California coast but possibly Maine, circa early twentieth century, unsigned, measuring 7" by 17" (14 1/2" by 25" in its interesting blackish with reddish design frame). The work and framing is very presentable as-is, with just very slight wear to the frame. At the left edge one can see where the portion hidden by framing is fresher in color; therefore we can state that a cleaning would remove the somewhat yellowed varn...

Pastel on paper drawing of an attractive young blue-eyed, red-haired girl in white blouse with aqua bandana, apparently unsigned, 18 1/4" by 15" inside the mat, 25 1/2" by 22 1/4" in a modern gold frame with blue green mat and inner fillet. The drawing was purchased in Newport, Rhode Island, the seller telling me it came out of an estate there, where it was suggested to him that the artist was Rhode Island impressionist artist Helena Sturtevant (1872-1946), but it is unlikely that that could be...

Small decorative oil on canvas of a scene in Thailand with small boats, a figure paddling one of them, two ducks, and a house on a shore, 6" by 9" (9 1/2" by 12 1/4"), signed at lower right "Sak" or "Yak". Probably tourist art, this is nicely framed and the mat is clean, making for a decorative and inexpensive Asian accent for the home.

Watercolor with gouache highlights on paper painting 13 3/4" by 9 1/2" inside the mat, of a large and impressive castle on a hill, (possibly Windsor Castle near London), a pastoral landscape with figures in the foreground, signed in pencil at lower right "A WATT". There is a listing for an Arthur George Watt (1883-1935) but I doubt this be the same artist, as the techniques and style do not mesh and the dates are wrong; this drawing is earlier. The drawing is beautifully executed by a talented...

Watercolor on paper painting of a classic stone castle with figures outside its portals, 14" by 10 1/2" (26 1/2" by 23" as framed), apparently unsigned. This is a circa 1850 work which has survived in presentable condition. There is foxing in the sky principally, as shown, but no large stains. To be sure, there were a lot of anonymous skilled watercolor artists in the British Isles in the 19th century, though this might well have been created by an artist that would be "listed" today.

Samuel Colman (1832-1920, sometimes misspelled as "Coleman") is today regarded as an important American artist of the nineteenth century, some of his works selling into the six figures at major auction. A traveler, he strayed far from his New England roots, taking in exotic locales in the Mediterranean, continental Europe, Mexico, and, notably, the American West. After training under Asher B. Durand and Carolus-Duran, he exhibited at the National Academy of Design in New York as early as 1850,...

Gouache and watercolor on paper painting of a tall ship on the ocean, two other vessels visible, 12 1/2" by 17 3/4" inside the mat, 18 1/2" by 23 1/2" framed, signed at lower right "F. P. Tyars/5-9-03/The Brig". A handwritten note of later 20th century date says "ON THE BACK/FROM E.R. HUGHES OR E.V. FLOYD/TO C.H. SULLIVANT ??/ON HIS APPROACHING MARRIAGE". There are some references to Tyars' work online, but little biographical information is available. I saw online a possible birth/death date...

Gouache on thin card, 10 1/2" by 7 1/2" (19" by 15 1/4" framed), the drawing featuring modern, possibly biomorphic shapes, in a combination of magenta rose, navy blue, yellow and green (colors popular at that time period), signed in pencil at lower right "GILMORE". I can't tie this to any particular listed artist but the image and colors are pure mid century design. The cream frame is of the period. The mat lines are hand drawn. Old, vintage print, somewhat resembling a chromolithograph when viewed with a magnifier, 26" by 20 1/4" as framed, the subject lush red roses and fresh green leaves. I thought that this might have been an original work but determined that it is actually a print, though a very good one. If you are decorating in Shabby Chic style, or just like roses and still life works, you might add this to your collection. The condition of the print itself is very good, with just some very even light oxidati...

Colorful drawing of fruit and a vase of flowers on a table, 20" by 24" framed, signed at lower right "Laurel Scherer". The drawing is beautifully executed by a sure hand, in what appears to be oil crayon or similar medium. I don't see a listing for an artist by this name so will offer this on its decorative merits. Condition is excellent. This colorful, vigorous drawing will look great in a dining area or large kitchen.

This little lithograph (4 3/4" by 6", 10 1/2" by 11" framed) is titled at bottom "Res. of Levi Davis, Jr., Esq.,/Secs. 28 and 29, Big Rock Tpl, Kane Co., Ill." It is a typical view of a prosperous new homestead in the nineteenth century. Estate owners commonly commissioned local artists to create an image of the proud homes and farms springing up in 19th century America, and this is one of those images, now firmly part of Americana. Horse-drawn carriages and buggies, gingerbread homes and nea...

Oil on canvas, 16" by 20", unframed, signed at lower right in red "SOON" and with artist's device, signed there "86", the subject a thatched roof village fronting low mountains, clothes hanging to dry in the breeze. This appear to be most likely Korean art, perhaps by a Korean-American, considering the American size stretcher. The name is common in Korea but I don't believe the artist is well known. The work is highly impressionistic and with a frame this will look even better. Condition is ...

Dramatic linocut print, the sheet 26 1/4" by 17 7/8", unframed, numbered at lower left 3/6 and pencil signed at lower right and dated there 1971, the "HB" blind stamp adjacent, by the important and still highly underrated Swiss-California modernist HANS GUSTAV BURKHARDT (1904-1994). The subject is somewhat uncertain; perhaps a look at a catalogue raisonne of the artist's graphic works would provide the title. Burkhardt was born in Switzerland and arrived in America in 1924. He attended Cooper...

This is a decorative print in excellent condition, the paper white and fresh and colors unfaded. There was an unsigned edition of 10,000 on Arches, with a center fold, printed by Mourlot but this example does not have the fold, so I am not certa...

The work was created in 1962 and bears the blindstamp of Tamarind, as well as another unidentified blind stamp on the front and an ink stamp of a gallery, or printer, on the reverse. Drawing, I believe in charcoal, 12 3/4" by 18 1/2" inside the matting, framed, but no glass, signed at lower left "M. Moss" and dated "March '93", the subject a large wooden house on a lake surrounded by mountains, small boats tied up in front. I think this is American but I suppose it could also be English; I'm undecided..........though, the framing suggests would make me lean towards American, as the reverse was backed by the typically American wood slats with knotholes. I don't see a listing by this name so the work stands on its own decorative powers, which are significant. In the style of Philippe Noyer, or possibly Charles Levier or Bernard Buffet, is this unsigned circa 1960's oil on canvas painting, 20" by 16" (28" by 24" framed), the subject a girl, lost in thought, seated on a chair in one of those intimate Parisian attic bedrooms with skylight, the walls covered with a decorative wallpaper, a vase, mirror, and toiletries on the dressing table completing the scene. This modern painting doesn't seem to have the fine, finished surface of a Noyer, but the subje...

(**One of two works by the artist in my shop**). Unlike most commonly seen works by this artist, which are actually serigraph prints, this is an original oil on canvas painting, measuring 34" by 18" (unframed). The scene, which could be described as a floral fantasy, incorporating at least two human heads floating within the composition, is rather typical of the work of the artist, HERMANN DIETRICH (1916-2003). Dietrich's online profile has only in recent years become more developed. Born in...

The work probably dates to the 1950's or early 1960's. Watercolor on paper painting of creamy roses, 17 3/4" by 14 1/2" as simply framed, signed at lower right "Vivian E. Tiedemann" and dated there 1907. This is a typical turn-of-the-century work by an amateur artist, though, a skilled amateur. Such watercolor paintings of roses were popular in the Victorian era and even into the early new century, artists continued to paint them in oil and watercolor. This example is in excellent condition. It would make a fine addition to a shabby chic type in...
