The Maid Oil on board 9 ¾” x 15” unframed Max Carlier is one of the great still life masters of Belgium. He was born in Tourcoing, Belgium in 1872 and died in Schaarbeck in Brabant in 1938. Carlier was a painter of the Belgian School who most typically executed still lifes of florals and fruits. He also painted genre scenes and interiors with equal skill. Size and condition: 13 inches x 11 inches framed dimensions, approximately 10 inches x 8 inches unframed image size. This painting has been taken care of well, there is only some very minor age-related soiling and minor scuffing to the frame.

William Corasick, b. 1907, studied at Temple University and at the University of Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Philadelphia Art Alliance, and exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, National Academy of Design, and the Butler Art Institute. The image on the right is an enlarged study of the vest worn by the Mother in the Van Dyck portrait. The Portrait of a Woman and Child was painted in 1620-21 by Van Dyck. The unusual design on the vest matches that of Rubens. The embroidery design symbol means family love. Again, I believe this represents a Flemish Honeysuckle which appears in over 17 Flemish Old Master Paintings. A new lab report confirms the gold color is real "GOLD" on canvas!!

Haku Maki did many prints some with interesting backgrounds some not. This modest run of rather large pints had a special black background: it is the texture of old leather. . Maki created and used this technique only in 1981 prints and mainly in persimmons. The persimmons are plump and meaty the green leaves of the fruit are nicely proportioned. Maki did only a few twin persimmon prints and none after 1980 except this one. 81-10 is in frame 2...

This is a early 19th century portrait of a New York Lady wearing a fur. It appears she is wearing a fur wrap. The oil on canvas portrait measures 26" 21 1/2". The portrait was purchased from the family from Woodstock New York. The name of the lady in the portrait is Mrs. Duenner. We have all the provenance and will advise more later. At this time, I am attributing this portrait to have been done by Sheldon Peck. It is very rare to see fur in paintings...

In late 2011, I received several Maki prints of 1981. These all have leather-like surfaces. I thought this was a phenomenon of that year. I was wrong. Maki actually used this surface in 1971 for a few Persimmon prints and then not again until 1981. I show here copies from my Maki archives. Fernand Leger, French,1881-1955. This stunning example of Fernand Leger's imagery at his peak period in the 1920's is graphite and gouache on paper. It is 34.5cm h by 25cm w in a beautiful frame 55cm h by 45cm w. It is signed lower right F. L. 22 and inscribed "A mon cher Ami Albert Fratellini cordialement F Leger".
