Donald Shaw MacLaughlan was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada on November 9, 1876. His family moved to Boston, Massachusetts in 1890 where he began to experiment with different art media; watercolor, oil painting and finally, etching – with a few attempts at lithography. Oil on canvas painting of a farmer by a water pump in an open field, two dray horses at center and left slaking their thirst. The work measures 11" by 12" and 15 1/2" by 16 1/2" in frame that may well be the original. The painting is signed faintly yet distinctly at lower left corner "S.S.C.", which is one of the known signatures of American artist SAMUEL SIMPSON CARR (1837-1908). American Artist Leon Gutmann born in New York and studied with many of the abstract Artist including those of the Students League. He was personal friend of the artist Hans Hoffman and also showed with Max Kassler.
Gutmann studied in France after being educated in his Native New York, after WWI. He met the French Artist Jean De Botton, in 1950 who introduced him to his circle of painters and influential to his work.
