English school ( 18/19th century ), watercolor, miniature portrait of a woman in the manner of downman. Measurements: 2 1/2" x 2 1/4", framed and glazed in a 4 3/4" x 4" frame and in great condition.

A miniature of a beautiful young child who unfortunately passed away in 1798. The theme here is blue and white: in the clouds, in Harriet's eyes, and the ribbon in her hair. In contrast to that are the small areas where red makes its appearance: in the necklace, the child's lips and cheeks, and, to a lesser extent, in her hair.

The reverse of the portrait deserves special mention as it depicts a sheaf of wheat done with meticulous hairwork, cinched with a gold band and set against a mother of pearl background. Wheat was often used to symbolize immortality and resurrection...
