Norman MacLeish was born on August 29, 1890, in Glencoe Illinois, to wealthy parents and became a painter and graphic artist. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and with Pierre Vignal in Paris. MacLeish was a member of the Chicago Society of Artists and exhibited at several venues including the Art Institute of Chicago, the World’s Fair of New York in 1939, the Corcoran Gallery biennial in 1941 and the Golden Gate Exposition of San Francisco in 1939.

Japanese sosaku hanga “kappa-ban” (stencil print) by Yoshitoshi Mori (1898-1992) depicting Zenzoji Temple in Asakusa, Tokyo. The print is pencil-signed “Yoshitoshi Mori” at the lower right. The artist’s red seal is above the signature. The paper measures 16 3/8”V x 12 1/4”H and dates circa 1980s. This print has never been framed and is in very good overall condition.

A watercolor titled on reverse "The Scow ALMA", Tauranga, New Zealand, signed lower right and again on the backing, by listed England-born, New Zealand artist RICHARD "Dick" BAKER (1928-2004), measuring 6 1/4" by 9 1/2" (14 1/2" by 17" framed). The work was created in 1986. Baker's work is included in Te Papa Tongarewa, the National Museum of New Zealand, in Wellington, and at the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich, England. Modern painting of a hilltop town of Europe, perhaps in Italy or Greece, 30" by 24" (35" by 28 3/4" in silvery frame), signed at lower right indecipherably. The painting of an historic town is executed in a modernistic manner, almost cubist in spots. The painting might date to the 1980's. There's a three inch horizontal tear at lower left that can be repaired. The frame has a little wear.

Oil on canvas, 24" by 36" (33" by 45" as framed), signed at lower left "Cantrell". This is a good sized oil of a peaceful scene with tree and a house against the setting sun. I date the work to the 1970's or 1980's. Condition good with some light craquelure and very slight dimpling, but no holes. The frame upper left corner is separating just a little bit.

Haku Maki did some purely white prints—some had a small splash of color, others had none. This one, 81-3, offers three white plump persimmons. Persimmons were an oft-used subject, sometimes a single depiction of the fruit, sometimes two, but very rarely three persimmons and even more rarely done only in white. The print measures 9.5in W x 10.75in H and is in excellent condition. An edition of 130, this one is number 90.
