This detailed, finely painted work dates to the late 20th century, but the artist was clearly familiar with the similar works of the late 19th century by German, French and Italian artists working in the manner of Eduard von Grutzner (1846-1925)...

A stunning oil on canvas seascape signed S. Ottovani beautifully framed work

Oil on canvas, 36" by 24" (45" by 33" as framed in wood), the subject a wicker chair draped with lacy cloth, a painting in the background and tea pot at right, signed with what appears as "Egeun" at lower right and dated 82. A Greek-speaker emailed me to inform me that the signed name is, in Greek, "Eleni" (Greek for "Helen"). This is a bright, contemporary painting in really excellent, fine wall-ready condition.

Unsigned oil on canvas, circa 1970's or 1980's, unframed, 28" by 22", the subject a ceremonial dance mask and head wear such as might be seen in use in the course of special events on one of the reservations in Arizona or New Mexico. Large format Japanese limited edition woodblock print depicting a path through traditional buildings titled in kanji at the lower left "Kashiwabara" (station 60) from the series "Kisokaido" by Katsuyuki Nishijima (b. 1945). Pencil-signed and with the artist's red seal at the lower right margin. Numbered 1/500 at the lower right margin corner. "Kisokaido" is printed in kanji at the center of the bottom margin. Large 30" by 48" painting on Masonite (36" by 54" nicely framed) signed at lower right "Sardi". There is a listed artist Jean Sardi (1947-) but his works do not seem to resemble this and the signature differs. This is a thinned paint on rough side of the Masonite. A previous similar work I handled, by this artist, had an original pre-zip code label from Karl Mann Associates in NYC, apparently a well known interior design firm for decades, a label from the firm considered a good provenance...

Modern painting of a hilltop town of Europe, perhaps in Italy or Greece, 30" by 24" (35" by 28 3/4" in silvery frame), signed at lower right indecipherably. The painting of an historic town is executed in a modernistic manner, almost cubist in spots. The painting might date to the 1980's. There's a three inch horizontal tear at lower left that can be repaired. The frame has a little wear.

Oil on canvas, 21" by 26" (26" by 31" as framed), the subject a winter landscape with coniferous trees in the background, a small unfrozen lake completing the scene. This is an impressionistic work by a nicely listed painter, the works of whom appear with frequency at auctions in Finland. I currently do not have a lot of biographical information on the artist, who was, judging from the label on the reverse (see photo), a member of the Society of Finnish Painters...

Oil on board painting of the famous Matterhorn in Switzerland, two small wooden structures in the foreground and elegant trees at left completing the composition. The work is signed at lower right "M M Cole" and is dated there 1981. On the reverse of the frame is written "Miriam '81", so, we likely have an American woman as the artist. Measurements are 18" by 22" and 21 1/2" by 25 1/2" as framed...

TWO JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINTS COMMEMORATING FREDERICK STARR & NOSATSU.

Frederick Starr was a professor of anthropology at Chicago University who first visited Japan in 1904 and made many subsequent visits. He wrote many papers on Japanese subjects but is probably best known in Japan for his interest in pilgrimage, he dressed in traditional pilgrim’s clothing and performed the Shikoku pilgrimage in 1917 and 1921...
