A small pencil sketch on irregularly shaped scratch paper, roughly 4 1/4" by 4" (5 1/2" square in its simple wood frame from which it was removed for photography). The subject is an empty vase casting a shadow while resting on a narrow tabletop. Of possibly great interest to any researcher of the artist's life and career, the work is clearly a sketch, perhaps for a finished painting or pastel...

A large oil on canvas by Henry Charles Lee (American, 1864-1930) titled on the stretcher, “Winter Landscape” and signed lower left “Henry C. Lee.” He lived in Cornwall New York and in France, where he died. The stretcher had an old label for a French artist supplies dealer Lucien LeFevre-Foinet with the number 7350.

Under a partly cloudy but blue sky the sun casts the shadows of bare trees on the slope in the foreground while the hills and cloudy sky show beyond...

A strong pencil on paper self portrait in caricature style, 8 1/2" by 7" (14 1/4" by 10 1/4" framed), signed at lower center by the noted German painter and author, JOACHIM RINGELNATZ (1883-1934). The self-mocking profile drawing shows the distinctive nose and hair shock, both featured in a 1983 German 50 Pfennig postage stamp, a canceled example of which has been taped to the glass at lower right by a previous owner of the drawing...

PAIR of unframed, unstretched oil on canvas paintings, the larger 20" by 24", the smaller one 17 1/4" by 22", both signed at lower right "Allen H. Newton" and bearing inscriptions on the reverse showing the locations in Andover, Connecticut (east of Hartford, between there and Willimantic in the northeastern part of the state). Both paintings are in need of restoration, since they've been carelessly handled by past owners, including, probably, rolling...

Fernand Leger, French,1881-1955. This stunning example of Fernand Leger's imagery at his peak period in the 1920's is graphite and gouache on paper. It is 34.5cm h by 25cm w in a beautiful frame 55cm h by 45cm w. It is signed lower right F. L. 22 and inscribed "A mon cher Ami Albert Fratellini cordialement F Leger". There is some wear on the edges of the paper as can be seen but no damage to the image...

A truly rare, quality painting of the Seattle waterfront's Pier 7, circa 1920's, signed lower left by noted Norwegian-American artist YNGVAR SONNICHSEN (1873-1938). The oil on board work measures 18" by 24" (22 1/2" by 28 1/2" in an interesting Stanford White style frame). Written in an old hand on old label on the reverse is "PIER 7 SEATTLE 1925 or earlier"...

This is an unframed study in pencil by a noted figure in eastern American art, XANTHUS RUSSELL SMITH (1839-1929). The artist, at age 85, signed it with his distinctive "XS" monogram at lower left, and wrote "Painted in oil this size", and dated it Nov. 29- 1924. The sketchbook paper measures 6 5/8" by 9". It would be interesting to pair this with the oil version, in order to gain insight into the artist's artistic process...

For the collector of scarce early Utah art, an oil on canvas, 22" by 18" on the stretchers (29" by 25" in old, likely original frame), dated 1928 and titled on reverse "Timpanogos Creek", signed lower left by the noted Utah artist BENT FRANKLIN LARSEN (1882-1970). (There is also some old writing on paper adhering to the frame but it is difficult to read). Timpanogos Creek is a scenic area near Provo, Utah. Larsen is a well-known figure in Utah art...

Oil on thin card painting of a scenic rocky promontory and turquoise seas, possibly oil on thin canvas laid on card, 9 1/8" by 12 1/8", (14 1/2" by 17 1/4" framed), not signed on front, but on reverse in pen (ballpoint, possibly) is some writing in Russian. A Lithuanian friend who reads Russian said it appears to say the subject is "Gurzuf", which is a popular spot and favorite artist's subject in the Crimea...

Oil on canvas laid on board painting of a colorful, flower-filled garden with paths and birdbath, what appears to be a fog bank moving in, 15 1/2" by 19 1/2" (24" by 28" as framed), signed at lower left by the well listed California painter WILLIAM CONSTABLE ADAM (1846-1931). This is a typical work of an artist who is today best known for his depictions of the landscapes, gardens, and houses of the Monterey Peninsula area...

A large portrait of a woman of obvious wealth and status, 36" by 35", signed "Wells" at lower right on a prop envelope, and dated there 1930, set into a beautiful, unique, valuable 3 3/4" wide frame by the famous framemaker M. (Maurice) Grieve Co. of New York and London (see photo, reverse of frame). An online search did not turn up a "Wells" artist that would obviously fit with this work's subject matter, handling, and period...

Oil on canvas extensive mountain and trees landscape laid on board, 8" by 10" (10 1/2" by 12 1/2" framed), unsigned, circa late 1920's to mid 1930's. I am certain that this is by a listed artist but sadly there's just no hint as to who created this. The scene could be western, or eastern; hard to tell. It was found in Southern California. Oil on board painting of Crater Lake, Oregon, including Wizard Island at left, 11 1/2" by 13 3/4" as framed, unsigned. Compare the scene to online images of Crater Lake. The work is nicely executed and were it signed we would likely know that it was created by a listed artist. The date I would estimate as circa 1920 to 1940 or so. There is a two inch scratch at right center in the base of the trees. A cleaning and especially some varnish would really improve the appearance and would be well...

This is a fantastic oil on Masonite painting of Columbus landing at the Indian Islands. This painting is signed and dated 1921 by artist Frank Herbert Zeitler of Germany. Zeitler was born in Germany in 1874 and died in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on July 30, 1940. His obituary, which appeared in the Milwaukee Journal, 7/31/1940, noted that his religious paintings (including murals) and sculptures were in churches in many parts of the world. His work could be seen in St. Francis and St. Joseph's Churche...

Old ink and watercolor drawing of early 19th century men and a boy pictured in an English interior, executed probably early years of the 20th century, signed "O. Krause" and also bearing the word "Copy", 6 1/2" by 6" inside the opening in black glass eglomise style "mat", 10 1/4" by 9" as it was originally framed.
