MEDIA: Chinese brush painting TITLE: Cat Nap SIZE: 17 ¼ inches x 17 ¾ inches ARTIST: Chen Liang is a talented artist who is currently the chairman of the Literature and Arts Cooperative in Fudu, Heilongjiang Province. He specializes in detailed landscapes and pictures of flowers, birds and animals. He also uses the sobriquets Quan and Bi Guang. He has exhibited in the former Soviet Union, Singapore, Japan and Hong Kong.

Interesting, well-crafted panel, the design very Art Deco in style, featuring a male nude in reddish brown silhouetted against a silvery background. The panel measures 11 1/2" by 9 1/2" plus 1" wide frame, and is signed in the wet clay at lower right by artist HAL ALTMAN (1922-2011). There is a fine three-dimensional quality to the panel, the hardened clay painted in these two tones, which are so reminiscent of the Deco era...

This is an attractive and elegant poster, issued in 1954 for an exhibition of the works of the ultra famous and important Swiss sculptor, painter and printmaker, ALBERTO GIACOMETTI (1901-1966). Measuring 29" by 20 1/2", it is simply framed in modern metal with glass and no mat. The edition size of this particular poster, titled "Rue d'Alesia", is unknown. It is signed in the stone at lower right...

Original watercolor and ink drawing of a tropical orchid species, 20" by 16 1/2" (24" by 20" in mid 20th century simple framing), the botanical name Onsidium luxidum at lower right in pencil. A window in the reverse backing shows, written on a small piece of paper in brown ink in flowing early hand, "From Nature by T. Allport/Enville Hall April 1834." Enville Hall is today a classic English country estate and manor house in Staffordshire, in west-central England...

This small lively print depicts two generations of small children playing. It measures 6.25in x 8 3/16in.

An oil on Masonite painting of a red roofed mill with the mill pond in the foreground and a barn against a hill in the distance. Painted in an unusual palette that includes lavender. I have been unable to find a listing for the artist. In a new frame. 10 by 12 inches, with frame 12.5 by 14.5 inches.

Condition: excellent.

Though it is difficult to date, I suspect it is from the middle of the 20th century and most likely to be American.

A rather elegant landscape painting with a modern feeling, the predominating colors subdued yet elegant grays and earth tones, signed rather illegibly with a European hand at lower right corner and dated there 53. The unframed work on canvas measures 23 1/2" by 31 1/2". Signature looks something like "Oltarini" or "Ott....." or "Ult....." but despite years of trying to figure this out I have not succeeded...

Original mixed media (appears to be gouache, and reflective silver and gold paints, on paper) drawing, the subject two figures relaxing at a summery beach, a sunfish small boat off the beach, all bordered by a decorative modernist border with innumerable artistic shapes and unexplained elements. Painting signed Fang Zhaoling , (yes this is an emulation), dimensions are 85cm x51cm , with mounting L:225cm/88in and W:73cm/28.8in. Fang Zhaoling (Chinese: 方召麐, 17 January 1914 – 20 February 2006), also known as Lydia Fong, was a Chinese painter and calligrapher. She a led fascinating and turbulent life eventually settling in Hong Kong in 1948. Her daughter Anson Chan. The painting is well mounted on a traditional scroll.

This is a fine print on a puckery, soft, Japan-like very delicate paper, the image featuring an obviously Orientalist figure and a greyhound-like dog. The print is after the original 1865 painting by the artist, that painting having been offered at Sotheby's auction in 2009. JEAN LEON GEROME (1824-1904) was a major French academic painter and sculptor and educator of legions of artists in the 19th century in France. Today his historical subject and Orientalist works sell into the millions ...
