This note discusses new (in 2015)finds in the world of Haku Maki prints.

This is a copy of the 17th century portrait of Rembrandt's son Titus around 1668. The canvas has been relined and is mounted in its original stretcher. The frame is a old replacement frame. The original portrait of Titus by Rembrandt is in the Lourve. We will try to determine the age of the canvas and more information later.

This huge print Work 73-54 (Fish) is one of three unusually large prints Maki did. It measures 3ft x 6ft. Please see the research note that is included with the photos.

This is a early 19th century portrait of a New York Lady wearing a fur. It appears she is wearing a fur wrap. The oil on canvas portrait measures 26" 21 1/2". The portrait was purchased from the family from Woodstock New York. The name of the lady in the portrait is Mrs. Duenner. We have all the provenance and will advise more later. At this time, I am attributing this portrait to have been done by Sheldon Peck. It is very rare to see fur in paintings...

Maki's Emanation series may well have been 100 different images. This is an early one. It shows a young man ready to grope a woman’s breasts. Who is the man and who is the woman? Adam and Eve? Maki and his wife? Maki and another woman? It measures 16" x 16". Here I show images of the current emanation and single images of other prints in the Emanation series. The last frame is Emanation 100.

I call this set of images The Zodiac but Maki formally called them Animal Song + the animal name in kanji. The prints here are Animal Song. Red Lantern Gallery in Kyoto distributed them in 1968. In 1968 Haku Maki was commissioned by Red Lantern Gallery to produce the 12 animals of the Zodiac in a series entitled Animal Song. My Research Note 3 described the set briefly. This is an enhanced version. Maki did only 50 copies of each print; that was a normal run for him in that period...

This note looks at newly emerged prints that were created between 1968 and 1980. They include Work 616 (Moon and Bird) and the Figure series of prints.

These two study photos take the x-ray image of Whistler and we have done a image overlay of an original photograph of Whistler on the left. The image on the right uses a drawing of Whistler and overlays the x-ray. Please refer back to the photo of the original portrait in our listing.

"Sun Set" Watercolor on paper, 18.5" x 12.5" This master artist was born in Belgium and lived in The Hague. He was the student of the famous romantic painter Anreas Schelfhout and is best known for his landscapes. His watercolors are rare and valuable. This piece is not only an exquisit example of Destree's talents as a watercolorist, it is an unusually large watercolor for Destree, adding to its value. "Dahilas Simples" Oil on canvas, 21 3/4" x 18 1/4” Marcel Dyf was born in Paris on the 7th October 1899. As a youth he was influenced by the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist movements that he observed in Paris and Normandy, where he spent his holidays. He started a career in engineering but in his early twenties he decided to become an artist. He moved to Arles in Provence where he bought a studio and began zealously painting the inspirational. Dyf was self-taught as an artist...

Robert Brackman (Born Odessa, Russia 1898; Died Roank, CT 1980). “Still Life on White”. Oil on Canvas. Signed Lower Right and on Rear (with title). Dimensions; site 19.5"wide x 15.5"high, with gilt frame 27"wide x 22"high. Brackman studied at the National Academy of Design and was a long time teacher at the Art Students League of NY and elsewhere. His paintings are in many Museum Collections.

Notice how well the Rockefeller photo overlays the portrait. Refer to portrait in our listing. The black and white photos at the bottom shows the various images of Rockefeller in his early years.
