MEDIA: Chinese brush painting TITLE: Playing cats SIZE: 17 ½ inches x 18 inches ARTIST: Chen Liang is a talented artist who is currently the chairman of the Literature and Arts Cooperative in Fudu, Heilongjiang Province. He specializes in detailed landscapes and pictures of flowers, birds and animals. He also uses the sobriquets Quan and Bi Guang. He has exhibited in the former Soviet Union, Singapore, Japan and Hong Kong.

A well-painted oil on canvas (laid on board), 19 1/4" by 25 1/4" in later silvery-gold frame, signed at lower left "Lillian Reynolds" and dated there 1953. The scene is the timeless, shifting sands of the California desert, likely in the Palm Springs region. There does not appear to be information on an artist by this name, but that does not mean that she was not talented. There are a few light surface scratches and light soiling naturally accumulated over sixty plus years...

**One of a number of works by the artist in my shop** This is a watercolor drawing....an outside possibility that it is a monotype (drawing made on glass or other surface, then pressed into paper, and therefore a unique work) by the noted 20th century French artist CHARLES LEVIER (1920-2003). Measurements are 18"by 13 3/4" (27" by 21 1/2" as framed). Condition is excellent with colors fresh and bright. Levier of course is a well known figure in twentieth century contemporary art...

Original etching LA REVUE (The Review) by Jacques Callot printed in 1627, second state of two, Lieure catalog number 592. The print was done just before Callot started working on a huge print “Le Siege de Breda” and must have been done for better understanding of military formations. A poetic impressionist work circa late 1950's or early 1960's, featuring the famous, storied Moulin Rouge nightclub in the Montmartre district of Paris, signed at lower right "Fantin". The 20" by 15" painting (23" by 21" in frame) is quite atmospheric, the colors of the buildings, figures and cars standing out on this leaden, overcast winter day. Oil on pine wood panel, 6 1/2" by 8 1/2" (11" by 13" in old frame), unsigned, the subject figures in a clearing surrounded by feathery trees, a tiny brush stroke also indicating the presence of a scampering dog accompanying the small party. A charming old antique work in the Hudson River tradition; disappointing not to have found a signature, but I would think the artist listed. The painting has normal old light soiling, and the frame has some edge chips missing in a few places...

This is a fine print on a puckery, soft, Japan-like very delicate paper, the image featuring an obviously Orientalist figure and a greyhound-like dog. The print is after the original 1865 painting by the artist, that painting having been offered at Sotheby's auction in 2009. JEAN LEON GEROME (1824-1904) was a major French academic painter and sculptor and educator of legions of artists in the 19th century in France. Today his historical subject and Orientalist works sell into the millions ...

Interesting, well-crafted panel, the design very Art Deco in style, featuring a male nude in reddish brown silhouetted against a silvery background. The panel measures 11 1/2" by 9 1/2" plus 1" wide frame, and is signed in the wet clay at lower right by artist HAL ALTMAN (1922-2011). There is a fine three-dimensional quality to the panel, the hardened clay painted in these two tones, which are so reminiscent of the Deco era...
