Garry Seidel "Romantic Castle" Neuschwanstein Bavaria Photograph. :Limited edition 18/250 size 11 by 14
This is a rather typical work of the noted Bermudian artist ALFRED BIRDSEY (1912-1996), the full sheet affixed to a board measuring 18" by 23 1/2". Birdsey was a familiar figure in Bermuda for decades, a prolific artist, the works of whom traveled home with tourists to the island. This would account for the wide distribution of his distinctive work. Today his daughter continues the family tradition, with similar looking paintings being sold to visitors...
Fine etching of windmills in a landscape in a brownish-black ink, 9" by 11" (14 1/2" by 16 3/4`" framed), pencil signed at lower right by listed artist DIRK BAKSTEEN (1886-1971). The quality of the work is excellent, reminding the viewer of Rembrandt and other better known artists, though Baksteen is a somewhat obscure figure today. Born in Rotterdam and educated in art there at the academy, by 1912 he was in Mol, Belgium, becoming part of the "School of Mol" landscape artists...
Watercolor painting of some age, 13" by 10 1/2" (22" by 18" framed), the subject simply a tree, but, that subject is handled very beautifully, and the work is signed at lower right by artist Paula Day (on whom I find no information). The interpretation of light and color belies the hand of a talented artist. Judging from the framing materials this dates no later than the mid 1960's and likely earlier. I recommend a new mat only; the frame can be retained.
A black and white photograph of snow in woods, circa 1950's or 1960's, unsigned, 12 3/4" by 18 1/2" (17 1/2" by 23 1/2" in frame), recently acquired from the Beverly Hills estate of Lydia and Charlton Heston; the photo was hanging in a hallway lined with many, many photographic works. Lydia was an avid and accomplished photographer herself, and many of the pieces for sale at this event were her own works...
A circal 1960's watercolor painting of the famous 17th century church of Santa Prisca in Taxco, Mexico, and its picturesque sub-tropical surroundings, signed at lower right "Marco Antonio", "Taxco Gro.". The decorative piece measures 12 1/4" by 9 1/2" and 18 1/2" by 15 1/2" in green frame. It is in excellent condition considering that the drawing was made nearly fifty years ago. Taxco then as now was a tourist center, conveniently near Mexico City...
An old watercolor painting of the famous Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Germany, unsigned, circa 1940. The piece measures 9 1/4" by 7 1/2" inside the double mat and 14 1/4" by 11 1/2" as framed. The frame is modern and functional. Note the detail, including tiny figures and old cars and even double-decker buses. The gate, which dates to the 1730's, was severely damaged in World War II. I believe the artist may have created this during the war or just before it...
This is a relatively earlier (1976 or before) work of the noted Bermudian artist ALFRED BIRDSEY (1912-1996). Birdsey was a familiar figure in Bermuda for decades, a prolific artist, the works of whom traveled with tourists when they returned from holidays. This would account for the wide distribution of his distinctive work. Today his daughter continues the family tradition, with similar looking paintings being sold to visitors. Birdsey worked in gouache or possibly oil or acrylic on paper...
A contemporary painting of roses, painted in a highly impressionistic manner, with palette knife applying generous amounts of paint, giving the painted areas a three dimensional look, signed illegibly at lower right. The piece measures 10" by 8" (19" by 16 1/2" in attractive, complementary silvery framing). Both painting and frame are in excellent condition.
A small etching of a bearded, religious Jewish man, a title at bottom of the image in Hebrew characters translating approximately as "to good year you shall be written"---for Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year. The print is pencil signed at lower right by the noted, well-listed American artist LEONARD BASKIN (1922-2000). Baskin was born in New Jersey and educated at Yale, where he founded a small fine books press...
"William Hogarth" "Receipt for March to Finchley"
"The Farmer's Return" The Works of William Hogarth" as published by Baldwin, Cradock and Joy in 1822 with the original plates restored by James Heath, engraver to His Majesty. The Heath edition was the last to print directly from Hogarth's original engraved plates. All William Hogarth prints appearing after this date are copies of these original graphic works of art. Heath edition 1822 An original copperplate engraving — over 195 years old...
English circa 1850 landscape oil painting of a castle (the shape suggesting often-painted Windsor Castle) topping a low mountain, two tiny figures in the foreground. The work, 16 1/2" by 22" (19 1/2" by 25" in frame that appears "married" to it, and not that successfully, at that) is very, very grimy. This is a restoration project----to remove the dirt of 150 years, repair several small tears, and varnish the dry surface. There is no signature visible...
A late 20th century oil on canvas painting of a landscape, 30" by 30", unframed, signed at lower right "M T O'Brien". The colors used are light and airy----pinks, light blues, whites predominating. The creek or pond is very impressionistically presented. Great for a beach house or other sunny abode.
Contemporary watercolor on paper painting of iris or similar flowers, 18" by 12" (23 1/4" by 17 1/4" in metal frame), signed J. London under artist's red stamp. The work shows the skill of the artist. I see no information on an artist by this name. Condition is excellent.
Small oil on canvas laid on board, 9" by 7" framed, unsigned, the view being an extensive hazy landscape with high snowy peaks in the distance, a spindly tree in the middle ground. I have searched without success for a signature. Likely dates before 1940 and more than likely by a listed artist. Light areas in immediate foreground are probably old losses, which have been in turn varnished over.
Watercolor and gouache small painting of a path between trees leading to a clearing beyond, 8" by 10" (12 1/2" by 14 1/2" as framed), signed at lower right by the noted Indiana impressionist, EDWARD SITZMAN (1874-1949). The artist, most closely associated with Indiana, is known for his watercolor and oil paintings of quiet landscapes, usually lacking figures. Watercolors are more commonly seen, the oils relatively scarce...
Large 1980's screenprint poster, titled "Dakota", the subject a young woman, after a painting by famous twentieth century artist Patrick Nagel (1945-1984)...
An American circa late 1960's to about 1970 still life painting in oil on rough side of the Masonite, 18" by 14" (24" by 19 1/2" framed), signed at lower left possibly "Pardoe". The red poppies are beautifully rendered and the richness of the red contrasts with the deep blue of the vase. Condition is excellent. A very decorative painting, in a frame of the period.
