An antique 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon depicts the most central event in Christianity, the Nativity of our Lord Christ.

The icon is finely hand-painted in bright colors and gold on gesso on a wood panel. It depicts Baby Jesus laying in the cradle in a manger wrapped in swaddling clothes, with a Bethlehem star shining from above, flanked by the Virgin Mary and St Joseph.

The upper left part is painted with three kings on horseback traveling in search of Jesus...

An impressive very modern, complex watercolor and gouache painting on paper, 14 3/4" by 20" inside the mat, 26 1/4" by 30 3/4" in gold framing, signed at lower right by the noted artist JACOB LANDAU (1917-2001). The top portion of the piece contains words or word fragments, such as "WHAT NEXT" and "BIG"; lower portion seems to be a grouping of human faces and figures, some distorted, one appearing to beat a drum; perhaps this is a demonstration for a cause...

Artist Henry Thomas Alken, born in London in 1785, was one in a long line of family artists, which included his father, two brothers, and son. Alken first studied under his father, whose influence as a sporting artist can be seen in Henry Thomas Alken prints featuring hunting and racing scenes. Alken was later taught by John Thomas Barber Beaumont, a miniaturist painter, who inspired him to show several of his miniature portraits at the Royal Academy...

Painting on paper, either oil or acrylic, the subject a young boy, from the "Georgia Series", signed at lower right and again on the reverse backing by well listed American artist HARLEY MANLIUS PERKINS (1883-1964). The work, measuring 30" by 24" and 37" by 30 1/2" as framed, likely dates to about the late 1940's or early 1950's. Original oil on canvas by Joan Thorne (American, born 1943) offered in excellent original condition. This painting is signed, dated (1989), and titled "Ucello" on the verso. It also bears a gallery label with the name of the artist, the title, the medium, and the size of the painting (11" by 14", 12 1/2" by 15 1/2" in its original frame). Joan Thorne is an important contemporary New York-based American artist who describes her art as "metaphysical abstraction"...
