Floral Print Framed

Rare oil on canvas painting dating to the pre-statehood Territory of Hawaii days, 12" by 16" (15" by 19" framed), the subject given in pencil on stretcher as "Flow Up Falls" (resembles photos of the Big Island's Rainbow Falls), signed "SMITH 20" at lower right (and "SMITH" appears again on the reverse of the canvas and on the label still affixed at lower right). This is a scene of the Big Island, with 13,000 foot+ snow-capped Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa visible in the far distance...

Oil on canvas, 27 1/2" by 22 1/2" (36" by 30" as framed), the subject a young man wearing a colorful bandana, intently working on some objects in his hands, a traditional ethnic mask in the upper right background. The painting is signed in red at lower right "S. C. YUAN", (1911-1974), who was an important Chinese-American artist from the Monterey, California area, however, this is definitely NOT a work of that well-known artist (I showed images to several auction houses and a gallery or two)...

Fine watercolor on paper drawing of a dirt road or track in a country landscape, signed at lower left by the listed American artist NEIL REID MITCHILL (sometimes misspelled as "Mitchell") 1858-1934. Mitchill was born in New York and was painting in nearby Connecticut by the 1890's, where he is credited with being the first resident artist of Westport (which went on to become a 20th century art colony of sorts)...

Smallfield was a painter of genre scenes in oil and watercolour. He was a student at the Royal Academy Schools in the late 1840s with the members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, but he was probably not close to them then, for he is not mentioned in their diaries...

Daniel Tretiak chose to number this note 32, with no explanation of why there were no other notes between 28 and this one. In this note he focused on Poem J, a 1966 print that had just emerged (in 2019).

Painted in watercolor on organic material, this fine example of Wood's work depicts an older man with blue eyes and pigtailed hair dressed in a black jacket with gold buttons, and a white vest and stock. Housed in its original case, with the glazed reverse having fancy hairwork over a on a white glass backing.

The painting is in excellent condition, with no cracks, bowing, or paint loss...

A very well-painted mid 20th century copy of the famous 1864 HONORE DAUMIER (1808-1879) painting of two Moliere play characters, "Crespin et Scapin", (sometimes known as "Crespin et Silvestre"), that original now hanging in the Musee d'Orsay in Paris. This work, painted on the smooth side of a pressed wood panel, measures 22" by 31" (26" by 34 1/2" as framed). The current painting is very faithful to that original work...

Wonderful oil on canvas of young Mexican girl, reaching up to try to capture her pet bird which has excaped from its cage, in interior setting, wood frame, in the folky style of the renowned Mexican artists Horacio Reveria Rocha and Agapito Labios...

Original oil on canvas by Joan Thorne (American, born 1943) offered in excellent original condition. This painting is signed, dated (1989), and titled "Ucello" on the verso. It also bears a gallery label with the name of the artist, the title, the medium, and the size of the painting (11" by 14", 12 1/2" by 15 1/2" in its original frame). Joan Thorne is an important contemporary New York-based American artist who describes her art as "metaphysical abstraction"...

A Franck L. Paris France oil on panel painting dated 1969. An excellent example of 1960s French Modernism, this painting is by the renowned painter Franck.L. and is an early work by this respected artist who is still producing. Born in 1944, he started exhibiting in 1966 and his works have been shown at the Musee d’Art Moderne in Paris. This work is an untitled still life and it was purchased for a London, Ontario home in 1969...

French Miniature Portrait, Well executed French miniature painting, depicting an 18th century lady in impressive attire wearing fashionable hat, the portrait is 2.5"H x 2"W housed in a 5.5"H x 4.5"w oval shape wooden frame. Condition report: very fine painting with water damage to the background.

Oversized Japanese woodblock print by Shufu Miyamoto (b. 1950) titled "Water Weeds at Hiroshima." The lower margin is pencil-titled in kanji and English, pencil-signed, and dated '84. It is numbered in pencil 5/150 at the lower left below the artist's red seal. Paper: 17 5/8" x 22 3/4" (image: 15 1/4" x 21 5/8"). Very good overall condition. There are some minor wrinkles in the paper at the margin edges and there is a small mark in the margin at the upper left corner.

An original 19th century antique "small folio" Currier & Ives lithograph print with hand coloring, "A Home on the Mississippi", measuring 9 3/4" by 13 1/4" inside the present mat, 16" by 20 1/2" as framed. Condition is above average with no major damage as viewed; hand coloring is rich and not light-struck. There are minor flaws as typically seen in prints of this age such as slightly uneven paper tone. The 1871-dated print is of desirable southern subject matter...
