Joseph Fernand Henri Léger (French)February 4, 1881 – August 17, 1955) was a French painter, sculptor, and filmmaker. In his early works he created a personal form of cubism (known as "tubism") which he gradually modified into a more figurative, populist style. His boldly simplified treatment of modern subject matter has caused him to be regarded as a forerunner of pop art.

Watercolor on heavy pebbled watercolor, 10 1/4" by 13 3/4" (17 1/2" by 20 1/2" in simple, worn frame), unsigned, the subject an impressive sailing craft in a small boat harbor. The painting has a nice impressionist touch, and, apparently, some age (at least 1960's or before). On the reverse someone did some math calculations, writing the numbers in a distinctive old hand that is of a previous generation. The clean mat with gold inner edging can be retained; a new frame would work wonders.

The subject is a young, bearded man who appears almost as a religious figure. The drawing is heavily foxed in the field, adding to its antiquity. Some words are written in French on the reverse but the only one I can decipher is "bois" (wood)...
