Found in New Hampshire, this is an antique unsigned watercolor of a rocky coastline, sailing boats on the horizon. Measuring 13 1/2" by 19 1/2", the work on paper is glued down to an 1893 Salem, Massachusetts legal directory, the edges of which are crumbling. Those edges should probably be trimmed, and the watercolor then framed to preserve it for another century. Though simple and monochromatic, this is a work well worth preserving. One corner is brittle.

Vintage charming pastel on old paper, 12" by 8", the scene a quiet city street or lane with 19th century buildings, signed at lower right by the artist, E. R. VAN DEMAN, and dated 1901. Rather little information on the artist appears on the net, but a member of the board of the Delaware County Historical Society in Ohio contacted me to say that the organization has seven of her pastels in their collection, the subjects local places circa 1900...

An etching titled at lower left margin "A View of Rotterdam", signed with initials in the plate at right and dated there 1910, and pencil signed by the artist at lower right margin. The panoramic view would have been created when the artist was in his early 30's. The well-educated Gleeson studied at the Art Students League in New York with William Merritt Chase and Francis Mora, at the Saint Louis School of Fine Arts, at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris...

Modern painting of a hilltop town of Europe, perhaps in Italy or Greece, 30" by 24" (35" by 28 3/4" in silvery frame), signed at lower right indecipherably. The painting of an historic town is executed in a modernistic manner, almost cubist in spots. The painting might date to the 1980's. There's a three inch horizontal tear at lower left that can be repaired. The frame has a little wear.

Two fine engravings of Mount Vernon, and the White House, each framed and measuring 6 3/4" by 8 3/4". These appear to be the same images that have appeared on US currency in the past, and the very high quality type of printing (intaglio?) is the same process. Miniature sized etching (2 1/2" by 3 1/4", and 7 1/2" by 8" framed), titled in margin at lower left in pencil "Cape Cod Shoreline", and pencil signed at lower right by Massachusetts listed artist MARGARET ELDER PHILBRICK (1914-1999). This is a mid-century work, I would guess, by a woman artist who was known for still life and landscape works, primarily in the etching medium. A nicely worked watercolor of a church dominating over its obviously European village, 15 1/2" by 18 3/4" (21 1/2" by 25" framed), signed at lower right with what appears as "W Kuns" or "Whuns" or similar. The watercolor is clean, with some browning at the very edges from long contact with the mat. Probably executed circa the 1960's, possibly, in the Baltic states (possibly, Latvian) or another part of eastern Europe.

Irving Amen's works are most commonly prints, as he is considered a master print maker in woodblock, etching, lithography and silk screen; this example appears to be etching or etching with aquatint. He also executed oils and acrylics in the course of a long career. This work, titled at lower left in pencil "Love & Peace" and numbered there 31/200 examples, is signed in pencil at lower right. The print measures 20 1/4" by 14 3/4" inside the mat (32" by 23" as framed)...

This is the original cartoon art (5" by 16 3/4") for the daily strip of June 26, year unknown, by well known figure in American cartoon art, MERRILL BLOSSER (1892-1983).
