Because that species of cactus grows naturally only in Arizona, we can assume that this is indeed an Arizona scene...

This is an early work (**ONE OF TWO IN MY SHOP, THE OTHER VERY SIMILAR, JUST A BIT LARGER; I would like to keep them together because they make a most interesting pair), by the important, well-listed American illustrator artist and art educator BENJAMIN A. STAHL (1910-1987)...

Work is oil on canvas measuring 17 x 21“, in a baroque frame measuring 22 x 27“

A colorized print stamped Karl Bohme Munchen in the lower left corner along with a printers mark. Not examined out of the original frame. The frame measures 14-1/2" x 18"; the print , 9"x12".

Watercolor on paper drawing of a homey mid 19th century interior in America or England, measuring 9 1/8" by 11 5/8" as simply framed, the work signed "Sketch/Walter Richards" at lower right in white. This was probably preliminary art for a more finished drawing or painting by this well known freelance illustrator. The drawing contains a lot of detail for its modest size: five figures are about to eat soup from a cauldron at midday...

Crayon drawing on paper of village rooftops in a European mountain setting, 8 3/4" by 11 3/8" inside the mat, 14 1/2" by 17" in simple strip frame (not pictured), unsigned. The artist was talented but unfortunately remains anonymous. There are a few scribbles on the reverse side of the paper (see last image). The work dates to the first half of the twentieth century. It is in good condition, consistent with its age; some paper toning and very slight ripple.

To be sold together, available for purchase are two of the familiar Alaska scenes after original paintings by famed Alaskan artist SYDNEY LAURENCE (1865-1940), originally offered through Griffin's store in Juneau, AK. Each measures 9" by 7" inside the original mats (and 19 1/2" by 15 3/4" as framed). Titles are "Prospector's Camp", and "Trapper's Cache". The prints are in excellent condition...

Watercolor painting titled on the mat in ink "Rockport Bay", the subject small craft in a sheltered small harbor framed by distant hills. The artist signed the drawing at lower left "Norma Page Aug. '45" and again signed, this time on the mat, at lower right. There is another word after "Page" that appears as "Douyes" or "Damyes" or similar, but I am unable to locate a listed artist by any of these names...

Original oil painting on panel by Max Heimann (Germany, USA, born 1909). Circa 1940s. Probably painted in Shanghai where Heimann and his family were exiled during WWII. This painting is 17" square and is in excellent condition.

(ONE OF SEVERAL BY MERRIAM IN MY SHOP) An oil on canvas, 30" by 40", unframed), the subject a Southern California desert mountain wash and canyon, a cluster of desert palms grouped towards the center of the composition, the painting unsigned by undoubtedly by the talented California painter JAMES MERRIAM (1880-1951). This brushstrokes, size and subject matter of this particular example is very typical of the artist's work; I will stand by its being "a Merriam"...

He later made his way to New York where he found work as an illustrator. The artist created traditional horizontal format landscape works which appear frequently at auction in Germany, but I see only a very few portraits or genre works in the records...
