Gustave Courbet,(attributed) French, 1819-1877. La Recolte de Pommes de Terres, The Potato Gatherers is an impressive landscape with peasants harvesting potatoes in a rocky terrain. This large oil on canvas is 29"H by 36.5"W in the original 6" period frame. It has been lined and restored. Ir is signed though a ghost signature as a result of overcleaning in the 1990's. Provenance: Purchased by Jack Sartor, Dallas Art Dealer from a gallery in Pasadena, CA ca 1958...

(ONE OF TWO EXAMPLES BY THE ARTIST IN MY SHOP**), gouache on paper, (12 3/4" by 6 3/4"), and 1 1/2" wide frame, signed boldly at lower left by the well listed Italian artist GIOVANNI BATTISTA (1858-1925). This is a panoramic coastal scene, a common subject of the artist, who painted mostly scenes of Naples, Venice, the Amalfi coast, and Vesuvius. The painting is in excellent, fresh condition. Works by Battista are offered regularly at auction, where they can bring into the thousands.

An oil on canvasboard painting, the subject a tawny western American landscape populated by four cowboys and six horses, signed at lower left by contemporary artist Richard Harris. I do not see a listing for an artist by this name but obviously, he was talented, seeing as that he captured so beautifully the horses-- a notoriously difficult subject to paint well. The work reminds a bit of that of listed California artists Bill Bender and James Colt...

Watercolor on paper laid on thin card painting of a fetching, dark-haired young woman, apparently in Venice (tiny gondola/architecture at far right), holding spring flowers at the water's edge, " by ", and signed at right center "E. LARRI". I do not see a listing by this name but he/she worked squarely in the tradition of 19th century Italian watercolor art. The piece was in a nondescript frame when found, and backed by curling old acidic wood. I have removed it from the frame for photography...

This is a 1972 acrylic on canvas painting done by Suzann Phelan Denny. It is painted on a very large canvas which measures 62 3/4" x 48". This is a copy of a famous painting by the German Artist Cranach.

This is an original oil on canvas painting of the Madonna and Child. It is in a gorgeous gilt wood frame. The artist was Austrian, Hans Zatzka (1886-1945) In signing the painting, he used one of his pseudonyms, H. Ballheim. The painting is dated 1886. It measures 42 1/2 inches by 37 1/2 inches.

Original ink on paper drawing of four ducks in flight over a swamp or marsh, circa 1930's, signed at lower right with initials "P.Z.", which appears to correspond with inscription on backing "Painted or sketched by Paul Zeeze". At top on backing, is written "James Zeeze". Online research suggests the name may be found in Minnesota, which would make sense with duck habitat. Measures 10" by 6 1/4" inside the mat and 14 3/4" by 10 3/4" in black strip frame.

A contemporary drawing in gouache in the classic Indian manner, depicting mounted royalty on elephants, other mounted apparently royal figures (maharaja?) on a camel and horse, in an exotic landscape including a palace in the distance. The work is in the style commonly seen for at least 500 years in India and Persia. The artist has taken great care with the amazing details. Measures 13 1/2" by 10 3/4" framed. Possibly acquired originally in India (see reverse partial sticker).

Jonas Lie was a Norwegian born American painter, known for his paintings of the coastlines of New England and city views of New York City.

The three each measure 5 1/2" by 8" (10 1/2" by 12 1/2" identically framed). Each is signed with conjoined initials PB in lower left corner and the artist wrote her address and titles on reverse backing. The works probably date to circa 1980.
