All Items : Fine Art : Drawings : Pre 1990 item #1421824 (stock #JB04937)
A striking, complex drawing suggestive of three dimensionality, in rich teal blue and black, violet and gold, with strategic cut-outs revealing the white backing, 25" by 38' in the plastic enclosure box. The work does not appear to be signed but a fading label on backing gives the title as "Turquesa" ("Turquoise in Spanish) and the artist as JUNE SOBEL (1950-). Sobel was born in Queens, New York and grew up on Long Island...

Original lithograph in colors, on smooth wove paper, "Stars" (French version was known as "Etoiles"), 1938, after a gouache by the well-known important Russian modern artist WASSILY KANDINSKY (1866-1944). This print, signed at lower left in the stone with Kandinsky's "K" monogram, was published by Teriade, Paris, for publication in the French avant-garde magazine Verve. The edition, printed by Mourlot, consisted of approximately 2000 or 2500 impressions...
All Items : Fine Art : Paintings : Pastel : Pre 1930 item #1421822 (stock #JB05082)
A vintage, old, pastel on paper drawing of old steep-roofed houses in a mountain landscape, 10 1/2" by 15 1/2" (14 1/2" by 19" as framed, no glass), signed at lower right corner with initials that appear as "SHC.". The work probably dates to the 1920's or 1930's, judging from the style, and framing materials. The old paper has browned heavily and one can see a ghost image of the drawing on the reverse side...
All Items : Fine Art : Prints : Engravings : Pre 1800 item #1421821 (stock #JB03318)
This is a decorative, hand colored print, possibly dating to 1784, issued as a plate in "New and Complete British Traveller", titled at bottom "View of Hackney in Middlesex". Presently the print itself measures 6" by 6 3/4" (10 3/4" by 12 3/4" in simple black wood frame). I see from online research that this example seems to have been cut down, with all decorative border areas, and the name of the publisher, Alex Hogg, at the Kings Arms, No. 6 Paternoster Row, trimmed away...

A scarce botanical mezzotint engraving of the plant species "Caryophyllus gramineus humilis" (carnation), plate No. 330, from Phytanthoza Iconographia, 1737-1745, considered the first important botanical work to use color engraving prints. The work is known for the accuracy and beauty of the prints, which can now bring impressive sums at Sotheby's and Christie's auctions in London...
All Items : Fine Art : Paintings : Oil : Europe : Pre 1900 item #1421756 (stock #JB04313)
A nicely worked oil on canvas, 21" by 29" plus almost 1" wide old frame, the subject an extensive continental European landscape with figures on shore and in a small boat, a dog, wading and resting cows, trees and classic buildings, signed at lower right by artist "O. Kirkman" and dated there 1858. The more one studies this the more detail one sees. This antique painting will need restoration and it is well worth the effort to bring it back to displayable condition...
All Items : Fine Art : Drawings : Pencil : Pre 1837 VR item #1421755 (stock #JB05276)
An early pencil drawing of a charming country house (barn/hayloft?) with thatched roof, a group of figures conversing outside. A pair of mules, a split rail fence, and plane tree complete the scene. The work is unsigned. Measurements are 8 1/2" by 11 1/2" inside the mat. Someone decided to re-use a modern mat that had evidently been used on a print, as there are numbers on it as if from an edition...

On the stretcher is written "Painted by R A Wilson" and "Notre Dame Church in Paris"...
All Items : Fine Art : Prints : Woodcuts : Pre 1700 item #1421750 (stock #JB04532)
A fine old wood engraving dating to the sixteenth century, the title apparently "Saint Paul Giving a Letter to a Messenger" according to handwritten notes on the backing, which also relate that this is from the Biblia series. The artist HANS BROSAMER (circa 1506-1554) was born at Fulda in central Germany. He became known for his fine oil portraits, but also for his wood engravings and copper engravings, many produced for various editions of Luther's German Bible...

A color print of the Montana landscape, specifically the mountain seen from the Many Glacier region of Glacier National Park, titled at bottom margin "Indian Paintbrush" (the red flowers, commonly seen in the mid-summer wildflower bloom at the park), hand signed in felt pen at lower right and numbered there 272/600, by noted contemporary Western American artist MARK OGLE (1952-)...
All Items : Fine Art : Paintings : Acrylic : Pre 2000 item #1421744 (stock #JB04704)
Original acrylic on canvas painting, 18" by 13 1/2", unframed, by the noted Central Australian aboriginal artist JUNE BIRD NGALE (born c. 1954). The painting is titled on an original 1992 label of Utopia Art, Sydney, "Bush Tucker" (tucker is the Australian word for food). The label is affixed to the canvas and "June Bird" is written in pencil on the stretcher. We seem to be looking at some kind of bush or plant which would presumably have provided that food...

An antique painting of a classical landscape, the scene including feathery trees, a number of tiny figures, and a distant church, likely French or Italian, less likely English (the red tile roof, clothing styles), unsigned, painted on a board and set within an oval frame. The piece measures 13 5/8" by 16 3/8" including the antique frame...

A large unframed oil, 34" by 46", unsigned, a vintage mid-century work ***AFTER*** a DEAN CORNWELL (1892-1960) painting which was executed in 1953 for a New York Life Insurance Co. calendar, in commemoration of the 300th anniversary of the incorporation of New York City. The painting is meticulously painted and I contacted auctions dealing with illustration art to see if it might be a study for the finished work. The response is that it is most likely simply a work after Cornwell, so it is off...
All Items : Fine Art : Paintings : Watercolor : Pre 1970 item #1421741 (stock #JB05249)
A watercolor on paper of people conversing and socializing in a square or city street, the sheet 15" by 11", the drawing 12 1/2" by 8 1/2" (22 1/2" by 18" in newish gold framing), the work indecipherably signed in red below the linen mat. The signature looks like "Arnold Balg(xxxxx)" or any number of variations of that, but to date I have been unable to tie this to a listed artist. The work came from the liquidated collection of eastern Pennsylvania theatre owner mogul Merton Shapiro (also of ...

An impressionist painting of the famous obelisk and fountain in the center of Paris at the iconic Place de la Concorde, 24" by 29" (and the very nice period frame 31" by 36"). Curiously, the work is unsigned but the artist was obviously talented. Paint is thickly applied in places, thinly in others (artist used bare canvas in places to show clouds). The date of execution would be circa mid 1950's to about 1960, judging from the old-style vehicle at right center; this is a classic scene paint...
All Items : Fine Art : Drawings : Charcoal : Pre 1900 item #1421738 (stock #JB05250)
Antique drawing in charcoal on paper of four women who appear to be in surf or sand at water's edge, apparently unsigned, probably European and 19th century. The figures are somewhat heroic, as if survivors. Possibly a preparatory study for a painting, this work's authorship is unknown, but obviously the artist was talented and probably even listed and known. The sheet, 8 1/4" by 14", is seemingly glued to an illustration board backing. The paper is not rag paper so that would likely limit t...

An impressive watercolor landscape with Italian looking tree at left and extensive vista at right with small figures visible, unsigned on the front, but on the reverse is written in old pencil hand "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage" after JMW Turner by J Glen". This is therefore a 19th century work after a famous painting of Turner by that title, first exhibited in 1832. That painting, now in the Tate Gallery in London, was created subsequent to the publication of the very popular, lengthy narrative...
