An interesting Southwestern painting of a sunny courtyard in a Spanish-style building (church or mission) of the American Southwest---likely California, or Mexico---glimpsed through a grand old doorway, signed at lower right by artist Laurence McLaughlin. The 18" by 24" painting (26" by 31 1/2" framed) is not old (maybe 1970's or 1980's) but the traditional subject and technique could make it pass for an older work. Surprisingly I have not been able to locate a listed artist by this name...

One of a number of William Russell Flint prints in my shop, this is a fresh and clean example of the fine color photolithographs issued for collectors over a period of decades. This example, published in 1939 in an edition of 306, is signed in pencil at lower right and bears the characteristic embossed blindstamp in lower left margin. The title is "Provencale Granary". The 1939 date would place this among the earlier prints in the long series that spanned decades...

Three oil still life works on canvas by the same hand, each signed "G. Gillson", circa late 20th century, all painted in an earlier style. Measurements are 12" by 16" and 9" by 12", and frames 1 3/4" wide on a side. I do not see a listing for an artist by this name. These are nicely painted and will complement your traditional interior. The dark, wood frames have some scratches and you might want to replace them with gold, which would dramatically improve the overall presentation...

Daniel Tretiak tells us that in 1967 Haku Maki produced an alphabet series, Poem A-Z. He did all the letters of the English alphabet. This is Poem W, a strong rendering of the hiragana for You. A hand painted vintage copy of perhaps HENRI MATISSE's most famous painting, "The Dessert: Harmony in Red", one of his Fauvist masterpieces dating to 1908. That large work about 71" by 87", hangs in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. You on the other hand can own this faithful copy, painted very sensitively by a talented unknown hand, most likely in the 1960's or 1970's. The piece, on canvasboard, measures a more wieldy 18" by 24"...

This pencil/watercolor drawing on heavy paper, 34 1/2" by 24 1/2" is actually signed by the artist, one "Sil Marraccini" at lower right and is dated 2/11/39. Originally intended as architectural plans, it would today easily qualify as a late Deco/early mid century art work on its own accord. I believe I acquired this in the San Francisco area, where Bank of America began. No doubt this was a plan for the interior details and exterior elevation of a branch of the bank...
