This is a work by highly regarded American artist THOMAS WILLOUGHBY NASON (1889-1971). Nason was a Boston-born artist who by the late 1920's had taught himself the fine art of creating prints in the wood engraving process. This process was popular for illustrating books in the 19th century but by the twentieth it had fallen from favor. He revived the medium and truly excelled at it. By the early 1930's he had been exhibited at Boston's prestigious landmark Goodspeeds book store...

All Items : Fine Art : Paintings : Watercolor : Pre 1950 item #1416071 (stock #JB04378)
A rare opportunity to acquire a fine original drawing (13 1/4" by 10 3/8", and 20 1/2" by 16 1/2" in quality mid-century framing) by the world-famous American writer and painter HENRY VALENTINE MILLER (1891-1980). This work is very faintly signed, (and possibly also inscribed, just above the signature) at lower right and is dated there 1946, making it a rather earlier work. (Actually seems to read "8/46" or "18/46". From what I have read, this would not necessarily mean the eighth month of 19...

Oil on canvas landscape of the California coast with classic wind-shaped Monterey Cypress tree, possibly the famous tree on 17 Mile Drive on the Monterey Peninsula near Carmel, measuring 24" by 20" and 1 5/8" wide vintage white painted wood frame, signed at lower right "Bessie Lasky" and dated there "41". This is a beautiful California plein air work by noted artist BESSIE MONA LASKY (1888-1972), a lesser known but listed painter of the California school. She was Boston-born and spent some years...

All Items : Fine Art : Mixed Media : Pre 1950 item #1416291 (stock #JB01492)
This is a work in gouache, tempera or casein, 17 1/2" by 23 1/2" inside the mat liner (30" by 36" as nicely framed), signed at lower right in white "Liberte". JEAN LIBERTE (1896-1965) was an artist noted in reference works as early as the 1940's. A student at Cooper Union in New York and at the Art Students League with Kenneth Hayes Miller (at which he went on to teach, himself, after 1945), Liberte was a painter of many northeastern landscapes, including the Maine coast, Monhegan Island, and ...
All Items : Fine Art : Drawings : Charcoal : Pre 1950 item #1415885 (stock #JB0215)
This is a superb charcoal on paper drawing laid to an old board, signed at upper right (look carefully to find it, in the final photo) Ernest W. Scanes. The paper measures 17" by 22". I would date the work to the 1930's or 1940's, judging from the excellent WPA regionalism style. Indeed, this greatly resembles a number of "AAA" (Associated American Artists) lithograph prints of the period. Scanes is best known as a Michigan artist, certainly a Midwest artist, but also, due to his illustratio...
All Items : Fine Art : Drawings : Charcoal : Pre 1950 item #1419556 (stock #JB02311)
One of dozens of drawings by this artist that I recently acquired, (ask to see others, not shown in my shop), this is a fine image in charcoal on paper, 13 3/4" by 16 1/2" as inexpensively framed without mat, signed at lower right by California and Massachusetts listed artist DAISY MARGUERITE HUGHES (1882-1968). Hughes was born and died in Los Angeles but in between she spent much time in the Provincetown art colony on Cape Cod. Considering the subject matter of this drawing, I would think it li...
All Items : Fine Art : Prints : Engravings : Pre 1950 item #1421174 (stock #JB04315)
Three fine engravings of Mount Vernon, Monticello, and Independence Hall, nicely mounted and framed together vertically. The framed piece measures 16 1/2" by 11". These appear to be the same images that appear on US currency, and the very high quality of the printing (intaglio?) is similar. One wonders if these have been produced by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, either as printing proofs, or perhaps as official souvenirs to be sold in a gift shop setting. The detail is extremely cris...
