This is an example of Haku Maki’s production of small prints that were known as San Mon Ban. These prints were usually 2in x 2in but there were instances of larger ones. This one measures 6in x 6in. Dan Tretiak writes that Haku Maki began creating San Mon Ban in early 1975, a set of seven volumes of small prints. For some he used themes from the past, others were new themes that he used again and again in succeeding years. A small rendering for collectors to add to their holdings.

A nicely executed good-sized pastel drawing, 19" by 23" (24" by 28" framed), the subject a fast-looking high-end sailboat off a coastline, manned by a number of figures. A competently painted, luminous little work on canvas, 12" by 16" (17 1/4" by 21" framed), the subject high mountains in full fall color, likely the Rockies in Colorado, Wyoming, Montana or Idaho (or, possibly, even Canada). The artist signed the painting "C H Wells" at lower right. The painting likely dates to the 1970's or 1980's. While I do not see a listing for an artist by this name, he or she was clearly talented. The eye is drawn deep into this spacious and pleasant scene. Condition ...

This is a folky painting of someone's favorite St. Bernard dog, circa 1870's or 1880's (ONE OF TWO SUCH WORKS IN MY SHOP). Measuring 21" by 16" on the original very old stretchers and 12 1/2" by 12 1/2" (and 17 1/2" by 17 1/2" as framed), the painting is a sweet and classic rendition of a treasured pet of the Victorian era. Vintage dog paintings are very popular and collectable. This one has evidence of its great age, with a darkened surface, no varnish, soil/blanching, very slight stretcher bar...

PAIR of pastel drawings of stone buildings in Israel, each 13 1/4" by 9 1/4" (19" by 14 3/4" in simple light wood frames), each signed "N. Kobi", one dated '87, the other '89. I do not see a listing for the artist, who seems to have been skilled with pastel. Both works are clean. The frames have wear that could possibly be sanded out.

Lithograph of a bull in what appears to be a stark Southwestern landscape, 12" by 13 3/4" as framed, pencil signed at lower right margin by listed WPA era American artist CHARLES EARLE MILLER (1907-) and with notation "Ed. 30" at center margin. The image is a very powerful one, similar to the work of Peter Hurd, in some ways. Miller was a painter, etcher and lithographer. I see a number of works online dated in the late 1930's and early 1940's, but after that the trail is difficult to follow....

Nicely drawn watercolor and pencil work titled "The Entrance" on backing, signed at lower left by German-born contemporary artist and author "Renata Zerner", and dated 1972. The piece measures 17" by 11" and 20 1/4" by 17 1/4" in the period aluminum frame. The image is quite mysterious and dreamy, a male and a female torso standing on either side of a portal of sorts. The artist has left it to the viewer to decide exactly where "The Entrance" leads. Condition is excellent. Zerner was born ...

A PAIR of detailed ink drawings, one titled "The Cottage", featuring a tidy home in the English countryside, the other a dated 1911 detailed look at a Gothic church's walls and entrance portal. Affixed to the crumbling old backing is a label for "The Cottage", showing it apparently won the "John J. Burnet Prize" for Alex Nicolson, who was evidently a student in "Club No. 129". So Nicolson was evidently a talented young artist. The drawings were found framed but the crumbling frames were falli...
