Mason Wells American 1906-1984 large watercolor on paper of a figure of a woman walking on the deck of a passenger liner with the funnel and other parts of the vessel. Painted over pencil. On the back is written, “MASON WELLS/ maybe/ S.S. Berengaria/ when Student at/ Harvard.” Sight size 20 ¾ by 13 ¾ inches. Frame 28 by 20 ¾ inches.

Condition. Excellent. Frame has minor knocks. New acid free backing.

Old framing label shows it was framed in San Francisco. S.S...

Original charcoal drawing by Jean Hippolyte Marchand (French, 1883-1940). Initialed JHM l.r. Also with a gallery label verso from Crane Kalman Gallery, 178 Brompton Rd. London, which gives the name of the artist, the title of the work, and the name of the purchaser in 1967. Crane Kalman Gallery handled the estate of the artist and held a number of exhibitions of his work, including a retrospective exhibition in 1967. One of three works by this artist currently available.

This beautiful Cariatide is oil pencil on tan paper, apprx 16.5"H by 11.5"W, signed upper left " a Paul Modigliani", Verso original Modigliani Studio card, Gallery Bernard card and original Description label. Condition: paper laid on cardboard, edges fraying and some fading. It is likely that this is a drawing used in Modigliani's studio and that the Paul is Paul Alexander Modigliani’s Physician.

Pastel, chalk, and charcoal on a dark taupe paper, this drawing of a nude woman is strikingly beautiful and sensual. The frame measures 17" x 21" and the sight size of the image is 9" x 11", and it is double matted with a creamy yellow and brighter white mat, with a mahogany colored wood frame. Unsigned, it was attributed to Arthur Bowen Davies by a previous owner who owned several from this era, and one other was signed...

Watercolor and ink drawing of a stone house adjacent to a dirt road on which a horse is pulling a buggy, a split rail fence, trees and a cow completing this bucolic scene of times gone by, the art in an oval, vignette style, the painted area 5" by 6 1/2", 13 1/2" by 15" in modern framing, possibly signed at lower left but definitely dated there either 32 or 34. This is a very, very early drawing...

Drawing on paper executed in soft pencil, 7" by 8 1/4", essentially unframed (in a protective frame only), the subject an arid desert landscape butte under a crescent moon, the drawing signed at lower left "ARCH SINCLAIR". There is a listing for an Archie Sinclair (1895-), a student of Henry Keller. Sinclair is listed in many reference works. He is said to be associated with Oregon, so, this might be a scene from the dry eastern part of that state. Evidently he worked in the east as well...

Charcoal drawing of a Native American woman removing a garment, 17" by 9 1/2" (24 1/2" by 16 1/2" framed), signed at lower left by noted contemporary American western artist NED JACOB (1938-). Jacob was born in Tennessee and found himself in Montana at a young age, working in Glacier Park. He became acquainted with the well-known Montana artist Ace Powell, who became a mentor. In the 1960's Jacob moved to Taos, New Mexico, where he began to paint in Walter Ufer's old studio...

Drawing on paper, 6 1/2" by 9 1/4" the scene only, 9 1/2" by 12 1/2" as framed, signed at lower right, followed by "fec. 1818" (abbreviation of the Latin word "fecit", meaning "executed", in that year). Try as I might, I cannot make out the name. I've tried Pfohl, Pfahl, Pigott, and so on. In any event, here's a drawing that has survived in excellent condition after nearly 200 years...
