O'Hara was born in Massachusetts near Boston, the son of the founder of the Waltham Dial (Watch) Company. Oil on canvas Italian scene of the famous Bay of Naples with smoking Vesuvius volcano, unsigned, circa 1880 to 1900, measuring 18" by 28" (23 1/2" by 33 1/2" as framed). This is a charming scene, painted many times since the 17th century, of fishing boats in the bay, the backdrop being an ornate tower at left, distant houses on hillsides, and at right the curling smoke plume of simmering Mount Vesuvius...

Watercolor on paper, 4" by 10 3/4" (8 1/4" by 15" as framed), signed at lower left with what appears as "Stribens" or "Stirbens"......I do not see a listing for such a name. I could be misreading it. In any event this is a decorative old vintage watercolor landscape by a talented artist, still in its original frame. There's no glass currently, but the work has survived the passage of time in excellent fresh condition, with only a tiny handful of foxing spots...

Vintage charming pastel on old paper, 12" by 8", the scene a quiet city street or lane with 19th century buildings, signed at lower right by the artist, E. R. VAN DEMAN, and dated 1901. Rather little information on the artist appears on the net, but a member of the board of the Delaware County Historical Society in Ohio contacted me to say that the organization has seven of her pastels in their collection, the subjects local places circa 1900...

This is an American painting from the first half of the 20th century, the subject gulls in flight. The unsigned oil on canvas measures 24" by 36", plus 2 1/2" of interesting Deco style weathered black painted wood frame on a side. I purchased this in Miami some years back, thinking the work bore considerable resemblance to the Florida-period works of JANE PETERSON (1876-1965), a major American artist who painted in South Florida for some time...

A pretty scene of rapids and a wild river running through a wide gorge, trees bordering, signed at lower left with initials that appear to be MKB and dated there 1934. The watercolor on paper work measures 14 1/2" by 11 1/2" (25 1/2" by 21 1/2" in interesting frame, with drawn lines mat). The landscape could be Canadian as well but without more information on the artist it is difficult to determine authorship. Found in the mountain states of the west...

Watercolor on paper, 10 1/4" by 14" inside the present mat, and 3 1/2" of frame and mat, signed at lower right "G. MORELL" (or, MORELLY or MORELLI), showing a Southwest Hopi style native American pot against a striped background. This is an original watercolor, and NOT A PRINT! I do not see a listing for this obviously talented artist, but this is a very decorative work that will grace any home or office seeking a Southwest theme. Condition is excellent with fresh colors and no damage.

One of two works by this artist in my shop is this watercolor on paper, measuring 8 1/4" by 13 5/8" inside the mat, 14" by 19" as framed, signed at lower right by the noted American nineteenth century artist GEORGE HERBERT MCCORD (1848-1909). This is a nicely painted work by an artist considered to be among the "second generation" of Hudson River School painters. McCord was from the New York and New Jersey area, but he painted in Europe, and for a time in the western United States...

Watercolor on paper, 22 1/4" by 15", unframed, signed at lower right in black ink "N. P. Brigante", the subject a forest glade with trees, boulders and grasses. The painting is by NICHOLAS P. BRIGANTE (1895-1989), a California painter often confused with the Italian painter of Venice scenes, Nicholas Briganti with an "i". Brigante was born in Italy, and was in Los Angeles as a child. According to the Hughes biography, he was a sign painter and studied under Hanson Puthuff. After World War I ...

Large (21 1/4" by 30 1/4" plus 3 1/2" mat and gold frame) highly detailed drawing of a royal Indian elephant festooned with festive "hat", bells and rug, seen in profile, and surrounded by a decorative floral border. For the collector of botanical drawings and art, a nice unframed 11 7/8" by 9 3/8" floral watercolor drawing highlighted with a little gum arabic in the nineteenth century tradition. It is not signed, but I think at lower left in old faint pencil it says "yellow aralia", and at bottom, very faint and barely visible, there is a lot of illegible pencil writing.
