As Haku Maki aficionados know, Maki did many prints depicting the kanji for ox or bull. This one, Z-200b, is one of his great bulls. One of a small edition of 75, it is 12.5 in wide X 19in high. A rare print by surrealist print maker Ozaku Seishi, professor emeritus from Tama Art University. He is best known for small edition etchings, usually up to 30 copies, limitless experimentation with printing techniques and surrealist, often graphic imagery resembling distorted reality ¬neither quite explicit nor quite horror, but rendering a fairly dark version of dreams. Original stone lithograph, not an offset print, 23 3/4" by 26 3/4" inside the mat (not examined out of frame), signed in the plate by the artist Jan TOOROP and dated in the plate 1915. Executed primarily in black, note the color----pale orange in the cap and shirt, blue in the trousers. Toorop is a major Dutch artist, one of whose works (painting) just exceeded $700,000 at auction. His prints and posters are much more affordable. I don't see that this one is pencil signed...

A group of THREE 19th century English botanical prints, two framed identically in gold with closed corners, the third framed in a different gold frame with beading. The matching pair measure 19 1/2" by 17 1/2" in the frames; the final piece slightly smaller at 19" by 16". The print in that latter piece, by artist Fitch, has horizontal creases, one sharp; the year "1846" is written in pencil at bottom edge...

A circa 1940 lithograph, signed in the plate, and bearing pencil signature of the printer in margin under the mat, by the noted California Scene artist PHIL PARADISE (1905-1997). This seems to be a scarce work, as I see only two other examples after an online search. Those two were pencil signed by the artist and numbered out of an edition of 100. So we can assume that this was a limited edition...

A scarce lithograph print, the sheet 10 3/8" by 6 3/4" (13 1/2" by 10 1/2" in inexpensive modern framing) signed in the plate and dated 1893 by the noted French artist PAUL-ALBERT BESNARD (1849-1934). The image is a self-portrait of the Paris-born artist, who initially worked in the academic tradition before changing over around 1880 to an impressionist style. Besnard was commissioned to execute a number of murals at significant venues around Paris...

Dramatic linocut print, the sheet 26 1/4" by 17 7/8", unframed, numbered at lower left 3/6 and pencil signed at lower right and dated there 1971, the "HB" blind stamp adjacent, by the important and still highly underrated Swiss-California modernist HANS GUSTAV BURKHARDT (1904-1994). The subject is somewhat uncertain; perhaps a look at a catalogue raisonne of the artist's graphic works would provide the title. Burkhardt was born in Switzerland and arrived in America in 1924...

A rare and beautiful 18th century lithograph in Hebrew and Latin

A PAIR of lithographs, one of a male, another of a woman, the larger work 24" by 17 3/4" inside the mat (28 1/2" by 22 1/4" framed), the other 19" by 16 3/4" (23 1/2" by 21" framed), both signed in Hebrew in the plate, the larger print numbered 1/50 at lower left in pencil. The works are in black ink though the larger piece exhibits faint blue in the background and light red in the cap. The larger piece has two short edge tears, one at upper left (about 2"), the other at top (about 3/4").

ONE OF TWO OF THIS SAME PRINT IN MY SHOP, lithograph print in elegant gray and white on black paper, 27" by 22", (and 33 1/2" by 27" in silvery modern frame), pencil signed at lower right, and numbered 5/100 at lower left. The title is "Daphne and Apollo", the imagery consisting of idealized male and female figures with leafy trees in the background, creating a most interesting and modern composition that looks almost like a "solarized" photo...

One of an identically framed pair of Currier trotter horse prints in my shop, this example, "The Grand Horse ST. JULIEN, the 'King of Trotters'." (measuring 11 1/2" by 14 1/2" inside the mat, and 19" by 23" framed), is in very good condition. The print is after a painting by the noted American artist Scott Leighton. I have not examined it out of the frame but for the most part, the kinds of problems that most Currier and Ives print acquire over time are not present...

This is an attractive and elegant poster, issued in 1954 for an exhibition of the works of the ultra famous and important Swiss sculptor, painter and printmaker, ALBERTO GIACOMETTI (1901-1966). Measuring 29" by 20 1/2", it is simply framed in modern metal with glass and no mat. The edition size of this particular poster, titled "Rue d'Alesia", is unknown. It is signed in the stone at lower right...
