Beaufrere 1876-1960 This is an original drypoint etching by French artist Adolphe Beaufrere (1876-1960) The title of this etching is "Cottages by the Stream", it was created and printed circa 1930. It is editioned as 19/60. The image measures 8 1/2X8 3/4 inches. Hand signed in pencil in the lower margin.

A vintage oil on canvas painting of a river canyon of the west or Southwest, circa 1950's, good-sized at 24" by 32" (32" by 40" in the likely original old charming frame), signed at lower right by artist Charles Crowder. I do not see a "listed" artist name that would correspond. The work much resembles that of California impressionist landscape artist James Merriam (1880-1951). Condition is excellent.

By the Liege, Belgium-born artist ARMAND HENRION (1875-1958), a fine color etching in oval shape, of two clowns in full makeup, pencil signed and numbered 19/500. The artist is known today for his wonderfully expressive depictions of the clown, as well as mime reactions. Most of the works are actually self portraits. Found in New Hampshire, and bearing the label of a contemporary Portland, Maine frame shop, a watercolor painting of an old barge grounded on the shore of a creek adjacent to a woodland, a small house in the distance. The 11" by 14" work (17 1/2" by 20" framed) is signed at lower left and dated there "80". The signature appears to read "Ranger", as in Henry Ward Ranger (1858-1916), a well-known American artist. This is a possibility but could be difficult to confirm...

The work was created in 1986. Baker's work is included in Te Papa Tongarewa, the National Museum of New Zealand, in Wellington, and at the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich, England. Found in Florida, a PAIR of watercolor on paper paintings, each signed "H. Crouse 50", one featuring a young dark-haired woman dancing animatedly in flamenco style dress, the other featuring a young man with sombrero and traditional shoulder cloth and sandals. The works measure 14 3/4" by 10 3/4" inside the existing mats, and 22" by 18" in thin gold strip framing. The subjects might be Mexican, or Central American, or Cuban...

Detailed antique watercolor drawing of a country villa in a park-like setting, an elegant horse-drawn carriage approaching from left, 6" by 9 3/8" (11 1/4" by 14 1/2" in modern day frame), signed at lower right "Herter" and dated there 1838. The villa seems to have Italian or other Mediterranean architectural characteristics, so perhaps we are in Italy, and the artist is a traveler from Germany. This is all speculation as I cannot locate an appropriate artist of this name...

There is no signature. Frame has slight chip loss at upper left corner. A true antique drawing with considerable age; how old, it is not easy to say with certainty. There are light folds and creases. Paper is affixed at edges and corners to modern board. Allow for reflections in a few images.

Unusually large detailed engraving, 31 1/4" by 20 1/8", laid down on board, of Christ coming down off the Cross, this example engraved by Nicolaus Dorigny (1657-1776), and possibly after Daniel Ricciarelli (1509-1566), in turn after a painting by Raphael. The work is dated 1720 at lower left. There's a lot of text in Latin at bottom, and a close look reveals the names of the two above artists...
