An impressionist still life of vase and flowers on a table top in an interior, 23 1/2" by 17 1/2" (29" by 22 3/4" framed), signed at lower right by artist HAIG ALTOUN and dated there 1940. The work is beautifully executed by a trained hand but strangely I do not see a listing for an artist by this name, which is of Armenian extraction. Condition is excellent.

A fine, early print, (16 3/4" by 13 1/2" in its simple black framing), is titled in the lower left margin "Pennsylvania Quaker", numbered nearby 32/50 and signed at lower right margin in pencil by the noted American artist, PETER HURD (1904-1984). This lithograph dates to 1936, when the artist was only in his early thirties. Hurd was born in New Mexico and attended military academy there before realizing he wanted to become an artist...

Signed and numbered 25/35, this unframed limited edition lithograph by Spratling titled MAGUEY was produced in 1931 from his original drawing for his book LITTLE MEXICO. The lithograph measures 16" X 11.5". The landscape image is about 12" X 8". This is one of 7 lithographs we purchased from Weyhe Gallery in NY in 1995. Oil on canvasboard, 14" by 10" (19 1/4" by 15 1/4" as framed), signed at lower right in red "K. L. Weatherly" and dated there 1940. One of two works by this same artist I acquired at the same time, (the other one also in my shop), this is an impressionistic view of a southern American regional landscape, a swamp or lake with bald cypress and Spanish moss hanging from the trees. Such a scene would normally be encountered in a place like the Louisiana bayous...

Oil on canvas laid on board painting of a tree in late autumn, the leaves still in their golden glory, haystacks filling the meadow. This work measures 8" by 10" and is unsigned and not framed. On the reverse is written in pencil "Oct 7 - 1939". More than likely this is by a listed artist but his or her identity will remain a mystery. Put a frame around it and this will shine.

John Taylor Arms 1887-1953 American This is an artists proof etching by American artist John Taylor Arms. The title is Limoges, part of his French Church Series created and printed in 1932. This etching is hand signed in pencil with an image size of 10 1/16X13 5/8. This image is inscribed lower right: "Beautiful impression, pulled by D.S. and J.T.A." Inscribed also as artist proof number III. Printed on a J. Whatman watermarked laid type paper. A beautiful impression.

A nice watercolor portrait of a young man, probably in his mid-teens, signed, “Elinor M. Barnard/1933.” The young man with brown hair and eyes wearing an open necked white shirt leans into the picture plane with a sense of youthful eagerness. Elinor Barnard (1872-1942) was born and studied in the UK, but worked mostly in the USA, principally New York City. She has a relaxed and economical style. Sight size 16 3/8 by 12 ¼ inches. Beautifully executed drawing in soft pencil, 8 1/2" by 11 1/2" sheet, 6 1/2" by 9 1/2" inside the rectangular border drawn by the artist, and 10 1/4" by 13 5/8" as framed, signed at lower right "Davis F. Schwartz", showing a copse of trees in a hilly landscape. This drawing, which reminds of works by Ralph Holmes or Maynard Dixon, is nicely framed in a 1930's or 1940's frame. Schwartz (1879-1969) has a sizable listing in Hughes' "Artists in California 1786-1940"...
