Large standing Lanna Thai wooden disciple with alms bowl, 19th Century, gilded, good condition, size H. 85 cm x W. 23cm

A softly drawn work featuring the head of a putto, between wings, on a trimmed sheet of paper, somewhat irregularly shaped, measuring 6 1/2" by 11 3/4" (12" by 17" in modern-day gold frame). There is no signature. Frame has slight chip loss at upper left corner. A true antique drawing with considerable age; how old, it is not easy to say with certainty. There are light folds and creases. Paper is affixed at edges and corners to modern board. Allow for reflections in a few images.

A rare print from a series partially based on Hiroshige I's series (Famous Views of the 60-odd Provinces). This particular view by his protege is not based on a Hiroshige I work.

Born in Germany in 1857 in the town of Harthau, he moved to America and painted in New England and traveled to paint in Europe where this scene was done in Katwijk, which also happens to be the town where he died in 1929. An unmounted Japanese three-part woodblock print titled, Townspeople Watching the Noh play Okina in Edo Castle, 1889. The artist is Toyoharu or Yoshu Chikanobu (1838-1912). The work depicts the staging of the Noh play with a fairly boisterous looking crowd of townspeople and a group of Samurai and notables seated quietly. The height of the prints is 13 7/8 inches (35.3 cm) and they vary between 9 ¼ to 9 93/4 inches 23.5 to 24.7 cm) wide.

This is an oil on canvas, 20" by 30", signed at lower right "J.B. Radway", who was a 19th century California listed artist, (JESSE B. RADWAY, 1826-c. 1905), but the subject is given on the stretcher as "on the North Cheyenne, Col.". According to the Hughes listing, Radway was born in New York in 1826, and was a resident of Silver Lake, Kansas in 1880, Topeka, Kansas in 1884-85, Alameda, California in 1887, and Vineland, New Jersey in 1900.
