A mid-Victorian chromolithographic print c1860-80 in a period gilt frame depicting two kissing children with a doll. This unsigned 7-1/4 x 5-1/2" print is mounted on a lined mat and encased on a period 11 x 9" gilt wood frame with original glass; it is in excellent original condition with no rips, tears, foxing, staining, fading, losses, damage or repairs other than a small water stain to the mat on the lower right corner and some minor scrapes to the gilding on the frame...

Most would see this work as an etching or engraving and never give it a second look----but, it is, amazingly, an original ink on paper drawing (I guarantee that), measuring 23" by 16 3/4" (34 3/4" by 28 3/4" in dark old oak frame). Floating troubadours in their gondola serenade an upscale looking couple at right, as two other figures seem to be appreciating the pretty spring or summer day. The drawing is signed at lower right with what appears as "C J Meancon", the first letters conjoined...

It could be by a local artist of the China Trade School, or perhaps by one of the rare expatriate artists who visited the region, on the order of George Chinnery. There are minor flaws as typically seen in prints of this age such as slightly uneven paper tone. The 1871-dated print is of desirable southern subject matter...
