Francois Gall, Hungarian/French, 1912-1987 "Le Petit Dejeuner" is a beautiful oil on canvas signed F. Gall (lower right) 20 x 17 1/2 inches, good condition, circa 1940-50. It is Gall at his very best and was in the private collection of Frederic Stern of the Gering Galleries on Wilshire Blvd, Beverly hills, CA.

The frames are of identical silvery finish. Frames and paintings are in excellent condition. The expansive view out over a coast, and relaxed patios with their furniture, evoke pleasant thoughts and perhaps memories of vacations past...
An Original Polychrome Watercolor, signed by Italian Artist SIGNORELLI, Roma, circa 1920. The stunning painting skillfully depicts a Renaissance Page Boy patiently waiting, while holding his Master's Sword. Good condition. Size: H. 56 cm x W. 38 cm. Unframed.
A finely painting oil on canvas landscape of a windmill in moonlit landscape, a structure at left with a glowing window, the clouds luminous with the eerie light, and possibly some grazing animals at right, the work apparently UNSIGNED. The detailed meticulous handling suggests an early 19th century date---or possibly even earlier; the work has an Old Master feeling. Measurements are 18" by 24" (21 1/2" by 28" in traditional style old walnut frame with gold fillet)...

Daniel Tretiak did this note on Emanation 73, one of Haku Maki's works in his large Emanation series.
The note was done in April 2019. Eleven months later Dan Tretiak died. I write this with such great and lasting pain.

A watercolor with pencil and pen and ink showing the Arch of Janus in the foreground on the right with the tower and a porch of the Church of Saint George’s in Velabro Rome a little further back on the left. Written on the old backboard “S. Giorgio – Roma/ Augustus Hare” and a card on added to it fairly recently, probably when it was reframed, “S. Giorgio in Rome/ Dec...
Japanese limited edition woodblock print by Morihiro Sato (b. 1943) depicting white bellflowers. A student of Joichi Hoshi who was influenced by Hoshi's use of metallic pigments, the artist set the flowers and partial moon (or sun) against a metallic background. Depending upon the lighting conditions (see image taken with flash) the background appears either golden or silver. The print is pencil-titled in kanji "Autumn (Bellflowers)" and numbered 3/55 at the lower left...
An old oil on gray board painting of a stone bridge over the Seine River in central Paris, in high autumn. The work measures 9" by 12" (11 3/4" by 14 3/4" in attractive maybe 1930's frame). The signature at lower left appears to be "E Turner", the "E" placed on top of the "T". If I am reading this correctly, there does not appear to be a listed artist that would correspond. In any event, the work is excellent, and by a trained hand.
Watercolor painting of a scene that appears to be a youngster with adults at the entrance of a school, a total of five figures in the composition. The work, 13" by 10 1/4" (20" by 18" in a contemporary gold frame, no mat) is signed at lower center by well listed German artist CARL HUBNER (1814-1879). Hubner was educated in art at the Art Academy in Dusseldorf. He received instruction from Carl Ferdinand Sohn and Wilhelm von Schadow...
A very desirable work: the ***original cover art for the November 2, 1960 issue of Palm Springs Life Magazine***, by one of California's best known mid 20th century illustrators, EARL CORDREY (1902-1977). This watercolor and gouache painting measures 17" by 12" and is executed on artist board. It depicts a Palm Springs landmark, the famous tower of the old El Mirador Hotel, dating to 1928. The tower stood through ups and downs in the economy, until it burned down in 1989...

George O. Pop Hart, American, 1868-1933, "the Mule Car," Lithograph, image size 9 1/2 x 13 inches, 1928, pencil signed l.r. "Pop Hart".
Oil on canvas still life of red roses on a table with ceramic vessel, 17" by 39" as framed. The painting is executed in the Victorian style, but I think it probably dates to the final years of the 19th century or early years of the 20th. I cannot find a signature. There is a framer's stamp on the stretcher from Grand Rapids, Michigan, giving some hint as to its origin perhaps. Also the corner keys are of the post-1885 style...

An interesting abstract painting dating to about 1960, created by a German artist, Max Hansen (1898-). The work, oil and perhaps another substance mixed in, applied on canvas laid on panel, measures 25" by 13 1/2" and 30 1/2" by 19 1/2" in the original gray framing. This was acquired from a local family of German heritage, who stated that it was brought to Southern California from Germany more than 50 years ago. Family stated that the artist was "Uncle Max"----Max Hansen, born in 1898. The p...
Work 73-12A is a firm and strong dragon not fierce not wimpy. The central kanji is offset by a small yellow Maki sun at the top left and a red splash on the right. They counterbalance each other and give color and verve to the whole print.

In 1968 Haku Maki completed his Animal Song series. It was 12 different prints, one for each year of the Chinese/Japanese zodiac. Each print had the title Animal Song and the kanji for the animal, which was not translated. This print, Animal Song [dragon], 14/50, is a beautiful Maki red. The dragon of the image is a very traditional Chinese character for dragon. In this print Maki used the theme dragon for the first time. This dashing abstract kanji seems to almost swirl out of the paper.

Oil on canvas California coastal landscape, in extremely poor condition, in need of someone to love it and preserve it. The work measures 19" by 22" (23" by 26" framed), and is signed at lower right J... WITT. From comparison to a fully signed painting, I can say that this is a work of listed California artist JESSIE R. DeWITT. DeWitt was active in the Laguna Beach area in the 1940's, and has some ties to Arkansas, but generally there is little biographical information available on this talen...
An oil on panel painting of a red covered bridge in a mountain landscape, a village at left center, 13" by 19 1/2" (16" by 22" framed), signed at lower right by artist Ed Mifflin. I do not see a listing for this name. The scene likely shows Vermont or Maine; possibly there are covered bridges in hilly southern Ohio that might fit. In any event the circa 1960 work is very poetic. The black panel on which this is painted was not meant for art use, leading one to suspect that the artist was a t...

This Abstract Expressionist painting dates to 1957, and it has a partial signature on the lower left corner. It measures 38" x 28" and has a small amount of paint loss. Notice the bright and unique colors and with heavy inpasto brushwork. On 5/3/04, I presented this painting to the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation for review where I had a brief meeting with the assistant director. The painting was not confirmed, however, the painting will remain under review and evaluation. In addition, we have obs...
