Oil on canvas of a clapboard cottage by a lake in spring, 18" by 24" with 3" frame, signed at lower left "J.C. FRANCES". I do not see a listing for the artist but he or she was obviously at the very least familiar with the paintings of Henry Pember Smith (1854-1907) and George W. Drew (1875-1968), who painted eerily similar scenes. This painting shows a gambrel roofed cottage with blooming pink blossomed trees and ducks----an idyllic spring idyll in New England or New York state perhaps...

Diana Thorne, American, b. 1895, "Russians". An energetic image of a young woman walking her two Russian wolfhounds, this etching measures 5 7/8 x 7 7/8 inches, c. 1930, pencil signed below the image, titled on the lower margin. Diana Thorne was a well known early 20th century artist and illustrator, known especially for her etchings of dogs and illustrations of numerous children's books.

Tavik Frantisek Simon, Czech, 1877-1942, "Quai Voltaire au Printemps". This sunny Paris street scene was created in 1914 by Czechoslovakian artist Tavik Frantisek Simon. Soft ground etching and aquatint, image size 12 7/8 x 14 5/8 inches, pencil signed, edition of probably 250, cat: Novak 225.

Original oil painting on masonite board by George Joseph Habergritz, a well-listed 20th Century New York painter. This painting measures 13" by 9" (20" by 16" in its original frame). Tavik F. Simon, Czech, "From the Latin Quarter". This 1907 etching and aquatint by Tavik F. Simon measures 12 3/4 x 16 1/2 inches, pencil signed, numbered "81", edition of 150, cat: Novak-69, G. Petit publisher's blindstamp on l.l. T.F.Simon was born in Bohemia, now the Czech Republic. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and traveled extensively throughout Europe, as well as Asia and the U.S...

This is an American painting from the first half of the 20th century, the subject gulls in flight. The unsigned oil on canvas measures 24" by 36", plus 2 1/2" of interesting Deco style weathered black painted wood frame on a side. I purchased this in Miami some years back, thinking the work bore considerable resemblance to the Florida-period works of JANE PETERSON (1876-1965), a major American artist who painted in South Florida for some time...

Oil on board impressionist oil painting of architecture on dramatic coastal mountains, signed at lower right in red "A. Dickert" and titled there "Camogli". The coastal town renowned for its views is popular with tourists visiting the Liguria coast around Genoa. The work measures 13 1/4" by 10 1/4" (21" by 18" in its original black wood frame). The artist was born in 1878 but there appears to be little biographical information...

Stephen Parrish, American, 1846-1938, "On the Annisquam, 1880," Etching, image size 5 x 8 7/8 inches, 1880, Schneider #39, plate signed l.l. "S. Parrish" and "39" l.r.

Original watercolor on paper, 6" by 10" (12" by 16" as framed), signed at lower right "William J. Schaldach, Jr." and inscribed at left "To Nellie, with love, from Billy". This could be an oriole but I am not an ornithologist. This is a very clean work and it appears not to have been opened since the 1960's or 1970's. A few tiny black spots visible in some photos are on the glass and not the art itself...

Engraving, by the noted AEGIDIUS SADELER (1570-1629), possibly titled "Cottage Partly Built on Piles", from set of six landscapes, after a painting by the noted Flanders Golden Age artist, ROELANT SAVERY (1576-1639). Savery was an important Old Master of the Netherlands, and his original paintings sell for large sums at auction. Sadeler was a talented engraver, in demand by various artists who wished to have their original works translated into graphics...

An example of the etching originally dating to 1891, "Sitzender Mannlicher Akt" (Sitting Nude Man), by famous German artist KATHE KOLLWITZ (1867-1945). The sheet measures 7" by 6" inside the mat, 16" by 15" as framed. This is a circa 1946-48 posthumous edition on cream wove paper, with the A.V.D. Becke blind stamp from Berlin Halensee impressed at lower right (which I have tried my best to photograph). Kollwitz was born in Konigsberg in the old East Prussia...

John Winkler, American, 1894-1979, "Standard Fisheries". This 1941 etching by John Winkler measures 13 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches and is pencil signed. Winkler was originally from Austria coming to America at the age 16. After various jobs he impulsively enrolled in the San Francisco Art Institute and soon discovered his talent as an etcher. He became good friends with John Taylor Arms as well as Arthur Heintzelman. His works are found in many major museums throughout the US and Europe.

Karl Dehmann, German, 1886-1974, "Woolworth Building Through the Arch," etching, 9 3/4 x 7 inches on 15 x 12 inch laid type paper. Printed in brown-toned ink. Pencil signed in the lower right. C. 1925.

Louis Auguste Mathieu Legrand, French, 1863-1951, "Sous les Figuires (Beneath the Fig Trees)". A romantic original etching by Louis Legrand, image size 12 1/4 x 18 1/4 inches, 1895, edition of 50, state V/V, cat: Arwas-102, pencil signed and numbered. Louis Legrand was an important artist of 'La Belle Epoch' in France of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He specialized in etchings of the women of Paris, from the wealthy elite to dancers and prostitutes...

David Muirhead Bone, Scottish, 1876-1953, "The Piazza- Glasgow Exhibition," Etching, image size 4 1/2 x 6 7/8 inches, 1901, Dodgson 101, edition of about 90, plate signed l.l. "Muirhead Bone". the published edition of 90 proofs was not pencil signed.

A Watercolor by the Listed Artist, Kathryne Hail Travis (1894-1972). Travis was a student of Randall Davey, George Bellows, and Kenyon Cox. Measures about 13 1/2" by 9 1/2" matt opening, overall frame about 21 1/8" by 17 1/8". Titled "Fall Aspens on Mon Jeau", Travis has written that "Pic is watercolor sketch in the field for large oil painting in Texas..." Nice example.
