Irma Rothstein was born in Rostoff, Russia, and studied art in Vienna before emigrating to the United States in 1938. This is a mid 1940's work by the Nebraska-born artist. Thiessen's father worked in printing in Omaha. The young Thiessen went to work for an architectural firm, and studied at university in Nebraska. Oil on board, 14 1/2" by 20 1/2" as framed, unsigned, the subject an extensive hilly landscape with distant structures. I believe the scene is more than likely American. The painting could use a cleaning as there is discolored varnish, causing the colors to appear more brown and less blue/white in the sky. There is some soiling at top mostly and a small 1/8" or less pressure mark at center in the sky. Overall this painting makes for a pleasant and decorative landscape...
