William Morris Hunt, American, 1824-1879, "The Hurdy-Gurdy Boy". This is a rare original lithograph by American artist and lithographer William Morris Hunt. The image size is 7 1/2 x 5 5/8 inches, published in a small edition in 1857, after the painting by Hunt which is now in the collection of the MFA Boston. William Morris Hunt was one of the earliest American lithographers. He was also a painter and studied the French Barbizon style in Europe with Millet, a close friend...
An antique red chalk European drawing on laid paper, sheet 8 1/4" by 6 3/4" (15 3/4" by 12" in 20th century frame), unsigned, the subject an aristocratic woman formally dressed, with upswept hair of the period. One wonders if this might be Marie Antoinette herself, or someone else who might have been caught up in the 1789 storming of the Bastille and the infamous Reign of Terror. There is a watermark in the old paper. Taped at top edge only...
Torii Kiyonaga, Japanese, 1752-1815, "Two Women with Young Servant". This woodblock print by Torii Kiyonaga measures 9 1/2 x 7 inches. It is signed, sealed and titled within the image. Kiyonaga was one of the great masters of the full-color print depicting courtesans, beautiful women and Kabuki actors. Head of the Torii school, he excelled with "bijin-ga" (beautiful women) prints and these were considered to be his best works.
Joseph Pennell, American, 1857-1926, "The Square". This 1920 etching by the American artist Joseph Pennell measures 9 3/4 x 7 7/8 inches, pencil signed, edition of probably 50 proofs, cat: Wuerth 740. Pennell was an important American etcher, lithographer and illustrator. Good friends with James McNeill Whistler, he and his wife co-authored his biography. Pennell was known for his continued experimentation with technique and style, producing cityscapes, landscapes and marine scenes...
Circa 1870's watercolor, in Victorian or turn of the century gold frame, signed at lower left. Signed by an apparently little known artist, Carl H. Schmidt. The watercolor measures 9 1/2" by 13 1/4" (21" by 24 1/2" framed). The scenery portrayed is perhaps in the Northeast states. When I originally acquired this item, it was with a watercolor of Florida (copied from a Currier and Ives print), signed by the same artist. That piece, of the same age as this, was sold separately.

Original white line woodcut (aka Provincetown woodblock or woodcut) by Virginia Bill (USA, 1865-1960), circa 1930. In excellent condition. Archivally matted and framed. This work is signed by the artist lower right and is titled lower left "Portuguese Jewish Cemetery 11th Street N.Y." This is a view of an ancient Sephardic cemetery in New York, or rather of what was left of it after most of it was destroyed by road construction...
Oil on masonite, 18" by 14" (22" by 18" in its wood frame), the subject the familiar streets of the French Quarter, this being a view of Pirate's Alley, from Jackson Square, facing Royal Street, signed at lower right "Weller". I take from the website of the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts: "Dell Weller studied four years at the Art Students League in New York. After two years of study in Mexico, he returned to New Orleans. He developed a widespread reputation for his wildlife etchings...

A turn of the century oil of red roses, signed at lower right "Myrtle Crittenden". There is a "Miss M. Crittenden" listed in Hughes' dictionary of California artists, and she was noted there to have exhibited at the California state fair in 1881. This painting came out of the Sacramento area, so, that makes sense. Not dated but likely dates to early 20th century when such works were still especially popular, as they had since Victorian times...

This is an original color aquatint etching by American artist Lester George Hornby. The title is "Le Fete a Pantin", it was created and printed in 1911 in an edition of 25. A watercolor painting of a lonely lighthouse on coastal dune cliffs of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, signed at lower right by artist HARVEY JOHN DODD (1933-2011) and dated there 1987. This appears to be an unusually large example of the artist's work, at 21 1/2" by 15 1/4" (29" by 23 1/2" as framed in light wood with Plexiglas). Dodd is known for his coastal and marine works. He maintained the Harvey Dodd Gallery, a fixture in Provincetown at the tip of Cape Cod, since 1959, claiming it as the old...
Oil on canvas extensive landscape of trees, a body of water, hills and distant structures, 24" by 36" (31" by 43" in gold frame), signed at lower left "Emile Bovard". I suspect this to be a pen name for a talented artist as I see no listing for an Emile Bovard. The painting was likely executed in the 1970's or 1980's I would judge, from the materials and technique. The artist has created a good-sized and highly decorative work, with pleasing muted colors, the violets, lilacs, pinks, blues and...
Oil on canvas, unframed, 30" by 40", the subject large boulders and rocks surrounding a small pool of water, executed in a photo-realist style in muted colors, signed at lower left with the artist's name, copyright symbol, and date 1985, and titled "Slow Water" and signed again on the reverse. This is a relatively early work by the noted Twentynine Palms, California contemporary artist and muralist CHUCK CAPLINGER. Caplinger's website details his rise in art circles from NASA illustrator, comm...
This is a work so finely executed that it is difficult to believe that it is a drawing and not a print, but I absolutely guarantee it to be an original drawing. The subject is a priest or monk in an interior nook flooded with sunlight. He is holding a large pair of scissors and appears to be concentrating on a domestic task that is not quite clear to the viewer. At bottom in very poorly spelled German is the phrase "UEBERALL--LOCHER--IM--KIRCHEN--GUT--DA--TUHT--KAIN--FLICKEN--MAHR". The spel...
Stephen Parrish, American, 1846-1938, etching, "Port of Nice", image size: 3 7/8 x 5 inches, 1888, cat. Schneider-145, pencil signed lower right
An interesting painting of a brick church dramatically positioned in a rural landscape with distant mountains, the year 1898 appearing on the lintel over the door, signed at lower right corner "K. Shuck". Online research shows there was a Kenneth M. Shuck associated with the Springfield Museum of Art, having served as its second director, between 1951 and 1976. A 1954 photo online shows him standing in front of a Thomas Hart Benton painting. This may be by that individual. The painting, on can...

William Lionel Wyllie, British, 1851-1931, "Departure of the Fishing Boats". This is a remarkable original etching by William Lionel Wyllie, image size 9 1/4 x 14 inches, c. 1900, pencil signed, titled on the lower edge of the sheet. Wyllie was a well known marine painter and printmaker in early 20th century London. He studied at the Heatherley School of Fine Art, then at the age of 15 began his studies at the Royal Academy. At the age of 18, Wyllie won the Turner Gold Medal for his painting "Da...
A very early watercolor landscape of a thicket and meadow at sunset, signed at lower left corner and dated there 1887 (or 1897?) by the noted Indiana artist JOHN ELWOOD BUNDY (1853-1933). The work, 5" by 8" (11 1/4" by 14 1/2" in frame) bears many color notations on the reverse, likely in the artist's handwriting, giving us some insight into the creative process. The scene is very peaceful and calming, showing us day's end. Bundy was born in North Carolina and came with family to Indiana as a...
A **PAIR** of fine watercolor and gouache drawings, both of Punjab (northern India) soldiers in costume of their period, both signed "John Lucas" by the noted English artist JOHN SEYMOUR LUCAS (1849-1923). One is titled "5th Cavalry Punjab 1897", the other "37th Punjab Infantry 1905". Both measure 10" by 7" inside their present maroon mats (unframed). Detail of the soldiers' costuming is meticulous and impressive. The artist is known today as a Victorian England historical painter and theatr...
A very pretty contemporary oil on canvas landscape of trees, a cluster of pink flowers in the left foreground, signed at lower right by California Art Club associate member DULCIE ADAMS. Biographical information seems to be lacking on this obviously talented artist. The work measures 18" by 24" (26 1/2" by 32" nicely framed). Painting is in excellent condition; linen liner has a small stain that could probably be removed.
A well painted miniature portrait, executed in watercolors on organic material. The sitter is a nice looking blue-eyed young man wearing a black coat and blue patterned waistcoat. Presented in what appears to be the original heavy cast gilt bronze frame.
There are no condition issues with the painting, and the sight size is 4 1/2" by 3 1/2" with an overall size of 6" by 5 1/4".
Tavik Frantisek Simon, Czechoslovakian, 1877-1942, "Boulevard Saint Martin in Winter". A wintry day on a busy tree-lined street in Paris is the subject of this color aquatint etching by T. F. Simon. Published in 1914 in an edition of 200 it measures 12 1/4 x 14 1/2 inches. Pencil signed on the l.r. with a watermark on the l.l.
This artwork of the famous children's classic, Wynken, Blynken, and Nod, depicts our heroes sailing into the moon rise in their wooden shoe of renown. Over the decades since its appearance in 1889, these protagonists have been portrayed in various styles and genders, but this interpretation of the 1940s follows the 1938 Disney lead somewhat, showing them in Cupie style flying over beautifully rendered houses 1940s style.
I have been unable to locate a book with this scene, but there...
