This solid and impressive bronze is well sculpted with wonderful details and prominently signed on the rear depicting the "god of wealth or household", Daikoku with his mallet and bag of plenty, one of the Seven Lucky Gods but cleverly represented by a shishi, lion dog which Tsukigata used in a number of his bronze sculpture...

The work is apparently unsigned. There are any number of listed artists of the Hudson River School who could have created the drawing; Sanford Robinson Gifford, William Hart, Asher Durand and many others of note painted in the area...

In the period 1966-67, Haku Maki did two large series with Song as the theme. There was Flower Song, a series of 10 prints. And there was Animal Song which was Maki’s Asian Zodiac series, with 12 images. It was also a small series with small editions--50 in the case of Animal Song (released in Kyoto, so very hard to find: only one friend has the full set), I do not know who has the full set of Flower Song. Equally rare is Moon Song...
