Sold together as a matched PAIR, are these two watercolor paintings, paper laid on board, en grisaille (black/white/gray,no color), each 13 1/2" by 10" inside the mat, 20" by 16 1/4" as identically framed, both signed "S. LOEWE" or "J. LOEWE" and dated '94 (1894). At first glance, most people would think these are prints of some kind, but upon closer examination, incredibly, they turn out to be original watercolors, with amazing detail...

A nicely executed miniature portrait painted on organic wafer by Thomas Hull. The sitter is a blue-eyed gent in a blue coat, frilled chemise, and white waistcoat. Presented in a gilt metal frame with a collection label on the reverse.
The condition of the painting and the frame are excellent, with no issues. The dark areas at the edges of the painting are due to light refraction in the photos and do not appear in person...
If you collect early art of the Pacific Northwest, this vintage work might be of interest to you. Apparently unsigned, this multi-sided work measures 11" by 19" (14" by 22" as framed). It is executed on old paper, laid on gray board. The charming scene is packed with detail of horse-drawn carriages, dogs like setters or spaniels, trees, houses, and of course the famous snowy cone of Mt. Hood. There is a folk art element in this painting, springing from the details...
ONE OF A NUMBER BY THE ARTIST IN MY SHOP**This is a small etching (the sheet 5 1/4" by 7 3/4", respectably matted but not framed), by the noted California artist HARRIET GENE ROUDEBUSH (1908-1998), titled at lower left margin "Fisherman's Wharf" and pencil signed at lower right by the artist. The image features the fishing boats tied up at the wharf, long before today's mass commercialized tourist scene made the area virtually unrecognizable...

Anne Lane studied art at George mason University in Virginia, completed her education at Saint Patrick’s college, Ireland, where she studied theology and philosophy. The tonal and contemplated intensity of her paintings reflect her 10 years spent working as an artist under the desert sun of New Mexico. Her vibrant style, resonant with color and baroque in detail, swoons its delight over her canvases...

Adolph Richard Fleischmann, American, 1892-1969. This Renoir like floral still life is perfect in its simplicity and strong colors. It is 18" by 14" in its original 5" gold leaf frame. It is signed lower left with the monogram RF in the tablecloth. Fleischman was born in Germany and exhibited in Europe and New York. His work is in museums in New York and east coast museums and in France and Germany. He is listed in Who was Who in American Art as well as in numerous publications.
Small oil on canvas (9" by 6 1/2", 13"by 10" framed), laid on plywood panel painting of a dark green mountainside, some autumn leaves beginning to appear on two spindly trees, apparently unsigned, circa late 19th century. The painting probably dates to about 1880 but has been laid on the plywood in recent decades (some waxy drips on the plywood as seen). There is some craquelure with a few pinpoint losses. I have searched in vain for any hint as to who the artist might have been...
Watercolor and ink marker drawing of Greek buildings by dark blue sea, a boat at right, signed at lower left with signature that appears as "Bremmer". I think this was likely created by an American artist, perhaps painting while on vacation in the Mediterranean. I'd date it as maybe 1980's. It is a pleasant and decorative work that should evoke memories of vacations in the Greek Islands; this could very likely be a view of famous Santorini. Condition is excellent...
An ink drawing of scrubby dunes, titled at lower left margin "Seascape, after Wm. M. Chase", signed at lower right margin "Hugo Anderson" and initialed and dated nearby 1980. The roughly 6 1/4" by 9 1/2" drawing (11 1/2" by 14 1/2" in metal frame) could be by listed Santa Monica artist Hugo Anderson (1946-)----it was found in the area----but I cannot say with any certainty that that is the case...

It has taken some research on the net to determine that this unusual item is apparently an early 20th century facsimile of an incunabula (pre 1500 printing) leaf from a book. JOHANN GRUENINGER (1455-1533) was a major, prolific early German printer and publisher, who developed an innovative method for illustrating books. This sheet on rag type paper measures 11" by 8". There is text in old Latin, and an image of the Trojan Horse outside of Troy, the soldiers entering his side. Note the vivid ...

A lithograph poster printed by Maeght, 24" by 16", to be shipped unframed (flat or tube-rolled as per buyer preference), circa 1980's, publicizing the gallery's long and fruitful relationship with the famous Spanish artist JOAN MIRO (1893-1983). Miro of course needs little introduction, as one of the best known artists of the twentieth century, his colorful iconic imagery by now firmly integrated into modern visual culture. The first photo shows the print in a metal frame, behind glass; again, ...

A nicely painted oil on canvas still life of flowers in a Chinese vase or pot, balancing between trompe l'oeil realism and impressionism, signed at lower left by artist ELIZABETH CAMPBELL. This is a contemporary work, likely less than thirty years old, measuring 28" by 22" (33 1/2" by 27 1/2" framed). There is a listing by this name but I do not believe it to be the same artist. Condition is excellent save for a small scuff at upper left.

The artist DENNY WINTERS (1905-1985) was born in Michigan and died in Maine, but spent time in the Midwest and California in her lifetime. She worked at Woodstock in a WPA style, but later works became abstract, and her full oeuvre includes printmaking. She had many exhibitions at major institutions like the Carnegie, Gugge...
Mid 20th century painting of a vessel containing a plant with interesting leaves and orange tightly closed flowers, executed in an impressionist style with a modernist feel, on a 16" by 20" canvasboard, unframed, signed in black capital letters at lower left "Chatterton". Neither the signature nor subject matter resemble those of noted artist Clarence Chatterton, who was a student of Edward Hopper. I am offering it simply as an interesting still life painting. Condition: some light abrasions ...

From our African Collection: Ivory Coast Figure, circa 1960.
Côte d’Ivoire was inhabited in the Neolithic era and possibly earlier, although the humid climate has effaced most traces of the country’s earliest civilizations. Portuguese explorers arrived in the early 1600s, and French missionaries landed near the Gold Coast (Ghana) border in 1637. European contact was limited until the 19th century, mainly due to inhospitable geography along the coastline. Akan peoples fleeing the Asant...
