A lovely pair of oil on panel paintings c1900 by Charles MacDonald Manly (Canadian, 1855-1924) ARCA, OSA. Born in England, he came to Canada at an early age. He returned to Europe to study at the Metropolitan School of Art, Dublin (1881-84). On his return to Canada, he became a founding member of the Toronto Arts Students League. Watercolor on paper painting, 18" by 12 3/8" (24" by 18" as framed), unsigned, the subject classic red roses, buds and leaves, all in a pleasing vintage gold frame which is in very good condition, with just a little bit of loss at bottom margin. The painting likely dates to the late 19th or early 20th century. It has survived in fine shape, with no foxing nor water stains. If you fancy the Shabby Chic style, this is a natural.

This etching with aquatint by the German artist, Johann Gottlieb Theophilus Amadeus Prestel, measures 12 5/8 x 18 1/2 inches, 1784, in two colors on green paper, plate signed and dated, after Parmigianino, artist info on backing, thread margins all around.

A very interesting mixed media work, on a heavy, soft paper, with I believe pastel, perhaps oil pastel, and maybe even some oil, apparently sadly UNSIGNED, measuring 28 1/2" by 18". The number "5" appears at lower corners. On the backing is written "John Atkins was the first guy I (talked?) to" and "JAY Torrance/Garage (??) Period (??). I do not know what to make of that, if anything, but the names John Atkins and Jay Torrance do not connect with any recognized artist...
