Here's an unusual item, a painting on white milk glass, in oil, measuring 5 1/2" by 7 1/2" and 8" by 10" as framed. The somewhat folk art feeling work is not signed. I would judge the age as anywhere from about 1880 to about 1920----a nautical type could probably date this more accurately by noting in which decade such a ship would have existed. Condition is good with minor paint losses from scratches and aging. However the small losses are not really noticeable at normal viewing distance...

Pastel and charcoal on gray paper, 17 1/2" by 11 1/2" (20" by 14" in wood frame), signed at lower right with conjoined initials "VG", which corresponds to the name of the artist Vinnie Gjere. I was able to figure out the authorship due to there being a companion piece on my site, also a still life and purchased at the same time as this one; that piece is not signed on the front but on the reverse in pencil is "Vinnie Gjere"...

Max Kassler, American 1905–1992 was an abstract Artist known for some of the most unusual experimental work based on the human figure He was an early student of the Picasso school of painting. This work culminated his idea of abstraction in space. This is part of the collection we have at the gallery. Automatic drawing was pioneered by the English artist Austin Osman Spare who wrote a chapter, Automatic Drawing as a Means to Art, in his book, The Book of Pleasure (1913)...

Blanche Camus, French, 1881-1968. This wonderful portrait of a woman on a terrace is 18.5" by 21.2" in an impressive 6" French Impressionist Frame. The canvas has been relined and there is minimal inpainting on the canvas with no repairs. It is from circa 1920-30 and is an extremely fine example of the use of broken brush strokes to convey the spray of sunshine and shadows in the scene.

Italian. 17th-18th Century, Oil on Copper, 21"w by 15.25"h in an antique frame 26.25"w by 22"h. On the verso is an antique inscription that attributes the painting to Jean Honore'Fragonard 1775. The inscription is obviousely antique and written in English.

Beautiful print depicting the Empress of Austria Elizabeth Funeral Lithograph 25x28

Oil on canvas, unframed, 20" by 26", signed at lower right in red "R. MacDonald" and signed/titled/dated on reverse "R. MacDonald/Heat Wave/July 10 1937". The subject appears to be a young man, possibly African-American, holding a hose on a young child at right, a wooden house hidden partially by a huge tree in the background. The artist has painted a very American work, (and possibly southern, as well), squarely in the 1930's style...

In 1968 and 69 Haku Maki produced Poem 5 for Festive Wine. That image was a paradigm of clarity as to what the kanji or Woman ought to look like. It was a smooth svelte character. Yet at this same time, he also did this print, a tall gangly woman. It is Poem 69-50. She looks as if she is askelter, not all “together”. Or is the left leg longer than the right one? The print itself is done in the Maki manner: Size 10.5 “ x 10.5”...

An interesting pastel drawing of older high rise apartment buildings in a major city, perhaps New York, signed at lower right with initials "EM" or "EW" and dated there 1939. The work, 15" by 11" (21" by 16 1/4" in simple gold metal frame), deals very skillfully with what could potentially be quite sterile subject matter in the wrong hands. This could be seen as a commentary on the anonymity of high rise living in any city...

Landscape painter. Born in Norway on June 1, 1856. Jonnevold came to the U.S. in the 1880s and is known to have painted in the Northwest before moving to California in 1887. Settling in San Francisco, he maintained a studio at 1617 California Street...

Pastel on thin paper board seascape of waves and distant shipping on a gray, overcast day, 10" by 18" (15" by 23" as framed) signed at lower left "Mangold". This is an early work by an obviously talented artist who does not appear to be "listed". This pastel comes with its original old early 20th century frame. There is a circa 1920's or 1930's red circular Seattle framing sticker on the reverse...

While we have yet to identify the artist or the subject, we would contend that the work is first rate considering the mood captured by the painter. The man exudes a somewhat austere aristocratic brood, yet exudes the strengths of youth and ambition, a man ready to make his place in the world. We believe the work to be of the British school painted c. 1850 or earlier as suggested by the early Victorian shape of the seat rail.
