Vintage oil of white, yellow and pink roses on a table top, circa Victorian late 19th century to the early years of the new century, apparently unsigned, in pleasing old wood and gilt frame, the entire work as framed measuring 11" by 13 1/4". The canvas is laid against the backing but is not glued down to it so there is some rippling. Other than a few minor surface abrasions the overall impression is quite beautiful. A fine acquisition for the still life collector or shabby chic decorator.

Pastel on paper colorful abstract pastel drawing, 15 1/2" by 19 1/2" inside the mat, 25 1/2" by 29 1/2" as framed, signed illegibly at lower right. The work is very modern and there's a lot of energy in the dramatic forms. No doubt this was created in the 1980's to maybe just a few years ago. The artist's signature is difficult to make out...

Serigraph (silkscreen) print after a painting by the giant of modern art, GEORGES BRAQUE (1882-1963), 9 3/4" by 32" (an impressive 18 1/4" by 41" framed), signed in the print at lower left and dated there 1920. The title, "The Blue Plums", appears in the wide margin below the mat. Braque needs little introduction, as one of the famous names of modern art who in the early years of the century developed, along with his friend Picasso, the Cubism movement, which changed the art world forever...

Oil on canvas, 20" by 24", 23 1/2" by 29" as framed, the subject a vase of orange flowers in a complex still life setting, an old timer wood dresser against the wall, other elements including books, smoker's pipe, ashtray, picture frame, tobacco can completing the scene. The painting is signed at lower left apparently "DAILEY" and is dated there "42". Also on the stretcher, faintly in white chalk, are the words " Still Dailey" (partly unreadable)...

One of two works by the artist in my shop, this is an etching on paper, 8 3/4" by 6 5/8" sheet, signed in pencil at lower right margin "PHILIP KAPPEL". This is a fine etching of a pair of wind-sculpted pine trees on an exposed knoll, by a well regarded artist most associated with Connecticut, where he was born and where he died. One of dozens of drawings by this artist that I recently acquired, (ask to see others, not shown in my shop) this is a sketch in soft pencil on paper, the drawing and frame 10 3/4" by 22", signed at lower right, and dated there '65, by California and Massachusetts listed artist DAISY MARGUERITE HUGHES (1882-1968). Hughes was born and died in Los Angeles but in between she spent much time in the Provincetown art colony on Cape Cod...

Old watercolor on paper painting, a study of trees by a lake, the artist likely American, circa 1920's, 13 1/4" by 8 1/2" inside the old mat, possibly signed at extreme lower right corner but it is indecipherable. There are old framer's instructions on the reverse side. The work was found framed and the frame is possibly available to the purchaser at no extra charge, but it is worn and tired. A fresh framing job will do wonders for this fine old watercolor painting.

Watercolor on paper painting, 10" by 14" inside the mat, (18 1/2" by 22 1/4" as framed), signed at lower left "Nolte", and bearing a note on the framing paper suggesting this to be Hidden Harbor, Maine (the word "Southwest", as in "Southwest Harbor", being crossed out). I believe the scene depicted would be on the famous central Maine coast, on Mount Desert Island, best known as the location of Acadia National Park. The drawing is executed in ink with watercolor...

Lawrence Stephen Lowry (1887-1976) is one of England's most beloved modern artists, his body of work, generally executed in a distinctive naive style, focusing on (as Wikipedia listing says) "scenes of life in industrial districts of North West England and 20th century urban landscapes peopled with human figures referred to as 'matchstick men'". He was a generally shy and not especially sociable, humble man, who turned down a number of honors such as knighthood, by an appreciative nation...

This is a work so finely executed that it is difficult to believe that it is a drawing and not a print, but I absolutely guarantee it to be an original drawing. The subject is a priest or monk in an interior nook flooded with sunlight. He is holding a large pair of scissors and appears to be concentrating on a domestic task that is not quite clear to the viewer. At bottom in very poorly spelled German is the phrase "UEBERALL--LOCHER--IM--KIRCHEN--GUT--DA--TUHT--KAIN--FLICKEN--MAHR"...

Oil on board peaceful landscape of a house backed by trees in a clearing, a dirt track leading into the scene, 12 1/2" by 15 1/2" as framed, signed at lower left "Westerlund" with some illegible letters before that, circa 1970's or 1980's I would guess. The lettering style and period after the name leads me to think this could be a European or European trained artist, but the scene might be American. The painting is in excellent condition and ready for display...

An impressive oil on canvas scene of a central Parisian square in the late 19th century, complete with fountains, horse drawn carriages, and figures, on a rainy day, 24" by 36" (31" by 43" framed), signed at lower left by the popular contemporary painter who signs as "G. SHERMAN". The scene is reminiscent of Caillebotte's famous scenes of Paris, or perhaps of a number of other impressionist artists who favored the always popular subject matter...

Oil on canvas landscape, 10 1/2" by 18", unframed, signed at lower right and dated there 1894 by well listed American artist CHARLES HENRY MILLER (1842-1922). Miller became known for his impressionistic paintings of Queens and points all over Long Island, including East Marion, near the end of the North Fork (Orient Point area). He traveled to Europe in the 1860's and, inspired by the sights and culture, decided to abandon the medical career for which he was preparing, in favor of art...

Watercolor on paper, unsigned, 11 1/2" by 19" inside the mat, 20 1/2" by 27 1/2" as framed, the subject a flotilla of impressive ships in a harbor, many of them flying the American flag. The artist is unknown, but was clearly a trained and skilled watercolorist. Judging from the steam vessels I would venture a guess that this would date to the late 19th century or early 20th...

Apparently unsigned watercolor on heavy paper painting of an arid landscape in the American Southwest, including a distant mountain, barbed wire fencing at a dirt crossroads, and fading evening clouds, 14" by 17 1/2" as framed in a faux burl frame. When I first saw the image I was reminded of some of the watercolor art of Peter Hurd---the memorable scenes he painted of New Mexico.
