Works by ALBERT HORATIO SLADE (1843-1922) are quite rare in the marketplace. The few that have come to auction feature coastal scenes of Los Angeles, San Diego and Ventura Counties. Prices of $8,000 and even $12,000 have been achieved on several larger works that are site-specific. Some are of great historical interest, as they document early buildings and communities. Slade was born in England and had a photography studio in Toronto, Canada by 1879. He was in San Diego by 1887...

Oil on canvas painting, 20" by 28" (24" by 32" framed), the subject a great clipper ship of the 19th century silhouetted against the setting sun (or dawn) on a calm sea. The painting is signed at lower left by the artist, William P. Lawrence and is dated below that either 1938 or 1928; difficult to discern. I don't see that he is a listed artist but obviously he was talented. The scene has a fine luminosity and clearly shows the painter's understanding of light and backlighting...

Etching in dark brownish-black ink, 14 3/8" by 10 1/2" inside the mat (19 3/4" by 15 1/2" as framed), the print numbered at lower left 37/100, while additionally signed and dated there as well in the plate, while titled in the plate "Notre Dame #2" at lower right. This is likely by an artist considered Canadian, CAROLINE HELENA WILKINSON ARMINGTON (1875-1939) rather than by American CAROLINE ARMINGTON (1898-1986), though records for the two seem to be hopelessly entangled...

Watercolor on paper drawing of a homey mid 19th century interior in America or England, measuring 9 1/8" by 11 5/8" as simply framed, the work signed "Sketch/Walter Richards" at lower right in white. This was probably preliminary art for a more finished drawing or painting by this well known freelance illustrator. The drawing contains a lot of detail for its modest size: five figures are about to eat soup from a cauldron at midday...

Etching on paper, 5 1/4" by 6 3/4" (10 1/4" by 14 3/8" as framed), the subject the old downtown of Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, England, including a church and medieval buildings, by the important American printmaker JOHN TAYLOR ARMS JR. (1887-1953). Arms was one of the best known and most highly respected American printmakers of the first half of the twentieth century...

Etching on paper, 10 1/2" by 13" and a narrow simple wood frame, the subject three generations of women by a 19th century style hearth in which a pot is boiling, the print signed in pencil at lower right by the artist EDWILL FISHER. I have looked extensively online and have found some other examples of his art, all graphic art, the subject matter including European scenes of castles and cities, and the American subjects including scenes on the Ohio River...

This is a color aquatint, 9 7/8 by 12 7/8" as framed, the subject a monumental Paris building in the autumn twilight, (the Pantheon, I believe?), numbered at lower left 248 of 500 and signed at lower right in pencil by the noted French 20th century impressionist painter CHARLES BLONDIN (1913-1991). Blondin was active in Paris in the post war years, painting and creating editions of prints which he numbered and hand signed. This example has not been examined outside the frame...

This is a very nicely executed decorative impressionistic painting of a pond in spring within a groomed park-like setting, complete with mini-island with pagoda type rock formation, all surrounded by flowering springtime trees. There might even be orange koi fish in the pond. The painting, most likely American in origin, is oil on canvas laid on board. It is signed at lower right but I cannot seem to make it out. Size is 12" by 16", unframed...

Gouache on paper laid on board, 20" by 14 1/4", signed at top left and dated 1960 by the artist, RASIK DUGASHANKER RAVAL (1928-1980). This is a modernistic view of three Indian women, balancing pots on their heads, a goat grazing at lower left among their anklet draped feet. The artist's works have sold into five figures at Sotheby's auctions of contemporary and modern Indian art...

Wood engraving on paper, unframed and in a shrink wrap sleeve, 14" by 9 1/4" inside the present mat, signed in the print at lower left and titled at bottom "Approach of the British Pirate Alabama", by the famed American artist WINSLOW HOMER (1836-1910). The well-known image was published on April 25, 1863...

Color offset print, 19" by 14 1/8" inside the present mat (30" by 22 1/4" as presently found without glass in simple metal modern frame), pencil signed at lower right, with notation "E.A." (epreuve d'artiste) at lower left, and signed again and dated '88 in the print itself. The subject is an idealized man in motion, with dynamic planes and shapes superimposed upon and behind the figure, creating a most interesting, complex, modern composition...

This is an original hand-colored, mid 19th century lithograph print by the iconic American ornithologist and naturalist artist JOHN J. AUDUBON, from the nineteenth century (circa 1849) quadrupeds mammals series in the small octavo size...

Oil on board, 14 1/2" by 20 1/2" as framed, unsigned, the subject an extensive hilly landscape with distant structures. I believe the scene is more than likely American. The painting could use a cleaning as there is discolored varnish, causing the colors to appear more brown and less blue/white in the sky. There is some soiling at top mostly and a small 1/8" or less pressure mark at center in the sky. Overall this painting makes for a pleasant and decorative landscape. A wider frame would wo...

Hand colored botanical print, 8 3/8" by 4 3/8" inside the mat (the actual print as trimmed just a bit larger), 16" by 11 3/4" as framed, the words "Pub. by Wm. Curtis St. Geo: Crescent Aug. 1. 1798. S. Edwards del. ESansom sculp" below and "No. 417" at upper right corner. This is a decorative work with fresh colors, in the tradition of 18th century botanical engravings and etchings, by a noted artist. The work has browned and there is foxing at lower center, but at over 200 years old, the pie...

To be sold together as a PAIR, here are two ink and gouache drawings of clipper style ships known as barques, each measuring 12 1/2" by 17 3/8" (21 1/2" by 26 3/4" as framed). One is signed "John M. Gorrie" and the other is also signed by the artist and dated 1956. Surprisingly, I do not see a listing for this talented artist. On the reverse is written on one "The Four Masted Barque Herzogin Cecilie"/formerly North German Lloyd Training Ship", and on the second work on reverse label is writte...

This print is by John Woodhouse Audubon, the younger son of the famed naturalist John James Audubon, and very much an active part of the family of talented artists documenting the botany and the animals native to North America. The work is one of the larger size original prints, plate number 139, titled "Large-Tailed Spermophile" (Latin name "Spermophilus macrourus, Bennett"). The subject is a male weasel-like North American small mammal in its natural habitat. The print is not a reproduction...

This is an etching on laid paper, the sheet 10 1/2" by 14", simply framed, pencil signed by listed American early 20th century artist HORACE DEVITT WELSH (1888-1942). The subject appears to be a coastal location in Maine, judging from the sails in the distance and the mountainous coast. Welsh was a student of William Merritt Chase, Thomas Anschutz, and Joseph Pennell. He does not appear to have been especially well known, and there are few auction records, but he did exhibit at the Art Insti...

Stipple engraving with hand coloring, titled "Ambrette d'hiver", with names of artists "Poiteau pinxt." at lower left and engraver "Bocourt sculpt." at lower right. The print measures 13 3/8" by 10 1/2" inside the mat (23" by 18 1/2" as framed). This botanical illustration print by the hand of noted French botanical illustrator PIERRE ANTOINE POITEAU (1766-1854) dates to the so-called "Golden Age" of French botanical illustration. Poiteau was a pupil of the great illustrator Redoute. He beca...
