Smith is a familiar artist on the plein air scene and I believe his works are presently underrated in the marketplace. For the collector of contemporary art, this is an unusual mixed media work signed at lower right by MARGARET HEHMAN (known since 1985 as Margaret Hehman-Smith). The work (11 3/4" by 16 3/8", 20 1/2" by 25 1/4" as framed behind glass) is executed with ochre chalky paint over a thin highly polished aluminum sheet. The artist has a website, which shows that she grew up in Pennsylvania, and studied at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles in the mid 1970s, with some study in Europe as well...

A Watercolor by the Listed Artist, Kathryne Hail Travis (1894-1972). Travis was a student of Randall Davey, George Bellows, and Kenyon Cox. Measures about 13 1/2" by 9 1/2" matt opening, overall frame about 21 1/8" by 17 1/8". Titled "Fall Aspens on Mon Jeau", Travis has written that "Pic is watercolor sketch in the field for large oil painting in Texas..." Nice example.

This is a nicely crafted work of an overly ardent suitor chasing his classically dressed prey in an overgrown garden setting. The artist is not well known but he is listed and was apparently known in Chicago and the Midwest as a muralist...

A small gouache painting of what I believe to be New York's tony upper 5th Avenue area in winter, the view looking south, encompassing the entry to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, skyscrapers filling the distance, 7" by 10 3/4" (13 1/2" by 17" in gold metal frame with double mat). I think it also possible that the scene could be Chicago's Michigan Avenue and the Chicago Art Museum; more research needed...
