This is a rather typical work of the noted Bermudian artist ALFRED BIRDSEY (1912-1996), the full sheet affixed to a board measuring 18" by 23 1/2". Birdsey was a familiar figure in Bermuda for decades, a prolific artist, the works of whom traveled home with tourists to the island. This would account for the wide distribution of his distinctive work. Today his daughter continues the family tradition, with similar looking paintings being sold to visitors...

Oil on thin linen canvas or possibly silk, 17" by 21" as simply framed, unsigned, probably circa 1930's to 1950's, the subject red and white roses. This was of course a favorite subject from about the turn of the century well into the twentieth, and today this kind of art is favored by those creating a shabby chic look. A color propaganda poster from the 1960's or 1970's Mao-Tse-Tung era, 19" by 29 1/2" inside the current matting, 28" by 41" in present simple black framing behind Plexi. The paper is of a less-finished type that may be akin to newsprint. Print has slight creases in places but overall is in good clean condition. There are very minor edge tears and skins in a few places where this was crudely taped in the past and small moisture stain as shown...

Oil on canvas painting of a dark-skinned woman, 26 3/4" by 7 3/4", unframed, signed at lower right by artist Destaalem Tadesse and dated there 2007. The long, narrow work will fit beautifully on a narrow wall in need of some color. The lady is holding a bowl of fruit, and a decorative background complements the figure nicely. English circa 1850 landscape oil painting of a castle (the shape suggesting often-painted Windsor Castle) topping a low mountain, two tiny figures in the foreground. The work, 16 1/2" by 22" (19 1/2" by 25" in frame that appears "married" to it, and not that successfully, at that) is very, very grimy. A PAIR of black and white photos of Chinese families, taken no doubt in China, circa early 20th century. The photos, which measure 11" by 14 1/4" (16" by 20 1/2" in black metal strip frames behind plexi) are later 20th century reprints of the originals. The images provide a fascinating look at the people of China in the early years of the century.

One could call this work a homage to Jackson Pollock and Sam Francis: colorful drips in red, blue, yellow and gray, on an inky black background, 20 1/4" by 24 1/2" as simply framed in silvery metal behind Plexiglas. There is no signature. A fine choice if you are looking for original abstract art for your mid century or modern interior.

A black and white photograph of snow in woods, circa 1950's or 1960's, unsigned, 12 3/4" by 18 1/2" (17 1/2" by 23 1/2" in frame), recently acquired from the Beverly Hills estate of Lydia and Charlton Heston; the photo was hanging in a hallway lined with many, many photographic works. Lydia was an avid and accomplished photographer herself, and many of the pieces for sale at this event were her own works. Small oil on canvas laid on board, 9" by 7" framed, unsigned, the view being an extensive hazy landscape with high snowy peaks in the distance, a spindly tree in the middle ground. I have searched without success for a signature. Likely dates before 1940 and more than likely by a listed artist. Light areas in immediate foreground are probably old losses, which have been in turn varnished over.

Attractive old antique print titled "Public landing. Cincinnati", identified by writing on backing as having come from Ballou's Pictorial Companion, 1855. measuring 11" by 15" in its old dark (probably stained walnut) frame with gold fillet. Condition appears fresh and excellent overall. The coloring is hand-applied. An interesting addition to your historic Ohio River or Cincinnati home or office.
